What does an associate user experience designer do?

An Associate User Experience (UX) Designer assists in creating intuitive, user-friendly digital products such as websites and apps. They collaborate with senior designers and cross-functional teams to conduct user research, create wireframes, and test prototypes. Their work helps ensure that products not only look appealing but are also easy to use and meet the needs of their target audience. Typically, this is an entry-level position where individuals gain hands-on experience in UX design processes and tools.

What are some common challenges faced by associate user experience designers when starting out in the field?

Associate User Experience Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing user needs with business goals and working within existing design systems. Navigating feedback from multiple stakeholders—such as developers, product managers, and senior designers—can also be demanding, especially when priorities conflict. Additionally, new designers may need to quickly adapt to various research and prototyping tools, while learning how to effectively communicate their design decisions to both technical and non-technical team members. These experiences, though challenging, help build strong collaborative and problem-solving skills essential for career growth in UX.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate user experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate User Experience Designer, you need foundational skills in user research, wireframing, prototyping, and visual design, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, and prototyping platforms is essential, and a basic understanding of HTML/CSS can be beneficial. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help you interpret user needs and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These skills enable you to create user-centric solutions and contribute to intuitive, impactful digital experiences.

$135K - $170K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Why Great Gray?
At Great Gray Group, we strive to set the bar for the retirement services industry. Our goal is to deliver advanced retirement solutions that combine our core fiduciary services with robust investment options, innovative technology, and dedicated client service. We focus on making choices clearer, transitions smoother, and the client experience more delightful. Complacency isn't in our vocabulary. Every day, we look for opportunities to better serve our clients, be an excellent business partner, and earn the trust of those who rely on us.

The Role

Great Gray is looking to add a Senior UX Designer to drive experience quality across our retirement investment platform. This role sits at the center of a channel-aligned product organization, translating complex workflows into experiences that are clear, efficient, and built around how advisors, recordkeepers, and asset managers work.

The Senior UX Designer will shape how we frame problems, lead user research that grounds product decisions in real behavior, and set the standards that make the design practice faster and more consistent over time. The person who thrives here brings sharp research instincts, strong opinions about what excellent UX looks like in a data-intensive B2B environment, and the communication skills and executive presence to bring stakeholders and customers along.

Location

This position will work from our Boston, MA office. Great Gray currently supports a hybrid work model with 4 days onsite, and 1 day remote.

Visa sponsorship or transfer of an existing visa is not available for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work directly for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship or transfer.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype across the full UX process — information architectures, user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity interactive prototypes for testing and stakeholder alignment
  • Lead user research for your initiatives — conducting interviews, usability testing, and surveys to build deep understanding of advisor, recordkeeper, and asset manager personas, their workflows, pain points, and behaviors
  • Partner with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to define requirements, iterate on solutions, and ship high-impact work
  • Present research findings and design decisions to stakeholders at all levels, connecting user needs to business outcomes
  • Work closely with engineering through detailed specs and ongoing support to maintain design quality through production
  • Collaborate with fellow designers to raise the bar on craft and establish design patterns, UI components, and accessibility standards that ensure consistency and scale across the platform
  • Complete other related duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in design or related field (Master's degree a plus)
  • 7+ years of professional UX/UI design experience in a B2B SaaS environment
  • Experience with 0-1 products and/or fintech preferred but not required
  • Proven track record of leading research end-to-end — not just running sessions, but translating findings into product decisions that changed what got built
  • Strong collaboration skills with product managers and engineers in an agile environment to ship user-centered solutions
  • Proficiency in Figma and other industry-standard design tools
  • Experience building or meaningfully contributing to a design system in a scaling product environment
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, low-process environment where you'll often be building the framework while using it
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity
  • Entrepreneurial mindset to bring best practice ideas to the team
  • Your standards reflect our core values: Growth Mindset, Disciplined Curiosity, Grit, Results Ownership, Collaboration

CITs are more than just an investment vehicle. They represent a forward-thinking approach to retirement planning. CITs have a history dating back over 90 years; but they have gained favor over the past decade, driven by innovations, and Great Gray has been at the forefront.

Great Gray has consistently delivered year-over-year growth at an above market rate and is investing in the continued development of its core CIT business as well as complementary administrative services and technology solutions for the retirement market.
