The Universal Banker is a customer-focused role responsible for providing a wide range of banking services to both existing and new customers. This includes handling deposits, withdrawals, loan payments, and assisting with account services. The Universal Banker will offer exceptional customer service, complete a variety of transactions, and help customers meet their financial goals. In addition, this role supports branch operations, ensures compliance with bank policies, and makes referrals for cross-selling bank products and services.


Key Responsibilities:

Customer Service & Account Services:

Transaction Processing:

  • Receive customer deposits, loan payments, and process withdrawals from savings/checking accounts.
  • Cash checks, record night and mail deposits, and issue savings withdrawals.
  • Accurately log all transactions into the bank’s internal system and maintain up-to-date transaction records.
  • Account Setup & Maintenance:
  • Assist customers in opening new checking, savings, and investment accounts.
  • Ensure that all required customer information is collected and accurately entered into the internal system, including verifying references and documentation.
  • Provide instant-issue debit cards and assist with IRA and CD openings.
  • Process special requests such as closing accounts, ordering checks, providing copies of statements, or referring customers to the appropriate branch representative for further assistance.

Customer Inquiries & Education:

  • Answer customer inquiries in person or over the phone about products, services, fees, and bank policies.
  • Inform customers about new services, promotions, and products offered by the bank.
  • Assess customer needs and make appropriate referrals for additional banking services.

Cross-Selling & Referrals:

  • Proactively identify opportunities to cross-sell various bank products and services such as credit cards, personal loans, mortgages, and investment accounts.
  • Make referrals to branch representatives or specialized departments for more complex financial needs.

Cash Handling & Reconciliation:

Cash Drawer Management:

  • Reconcile the cash drawer daily by accurately counting and packaging currency and coins.
  • Ensure the proper handling of loan coupons and other transactions, turning in excess cash to the head teller as required.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of cash and currency for the branch's operational needs.

Compliance & Security:

Bank Policies & Procedures:

  • Adhere to all bank operational procedures, security protocols, and compliance regulations by participating in required training and following standard procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality and safeguard sensitive customer information.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML).

Additional Duties:

Customer Relationship Management:

  • Continuously provide exceptional customer service to build strong relationships and encourage customer loyalty.
  • Follow up on customer interactions, ensuring all questions are answered and all transactions are completed satisfactorily.

Special Requests & Other Tasks:

  • Complete any special requests from customers in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist colleagues with branch operations as needed and support the branch team in achieving operational goals.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred (but not required).

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of general work experience, preferably in customer service or retail banking.
  • Experience in handling financial transactions, including cash handling, deposits, withdrawals, and account maintenance.
  • Previous experience in banking or financial services is a plus but not required.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Customer Service: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deliver outstanding service to all customers in a professional manner.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to ensure accurate processing of financial transactions and maintaining correct records.

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify issues and find solutions, particularly when dealing with complex customer needs.

  • Confidentiality: Ability to maintain discretion and protect sensitive customer and bank information.

Work Environment:

  • Office-based with standard business hours, with occasional overtime during peak times (e.g., month-end or special promotions).
  • May require occasional standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
