What is an associate technical product manager?

Associate Technical Product Managers (Associate TPMs) are entry- to mid-level professionals who help plan, develop, and launch technology products. They work closely with cross-functional teams, such as engineering, design, and marketing, to gather requirements, prioritize features, and ensure products meet customer needs. Associate TPMs often assist senior product managers with project management, roadmap planning, and stakeholder communication. This role is a stepping stone to becoming a full Product Manager and provides valuable experience in both technical and business aspects of product development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate technical product manager?

To thrive as an Associate Technical Product Manager, you need a solid understanding of product development, technical concepts, and project management, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, product management tools like Jira or Trello, and experience with APIs or software development lifecycles are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help you bridge the gap between technical and non-technical teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering successful products that meet business goals and customer needs in a fast-paced environment.

How does an associate technical product manager typically collaborate with engineering and design teams during product development?

As an Associate Technical Product Manager, you will regularly work alongside engineering and design teams to translate product requirements into actionable tasks. This often involves facilitating sprint planning sessions, clarifying technical details, and ensuring that user stories are well-defined. You'll act as a liaison, helping to resolve roadblocks and ensuring that everyone stays aligned on project goals and timelines. Strong communication and organizational skills are key, as you'll need to balance feedback from cross-functional teams while keeping the product’s vision and roadmap in focus.

Job description

Overview
Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work - whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity.
About DX
DX is the developer intelligence platform. We help engineering leaders understand how work gets done, improve developer experience, and make better decisions about productivity and AI. DX combines self-reported insights from developers with data from the systems where software work happens, then turns those signals into insights teams can act on.
The role
We are looking for a Senior Product Manager to lead DX's data platform and connector portfolio.
The data platform is the foundation beneath every DX insight. It connects to the tools our customers use, ingests and organizes their data, protects its integrity, and makes it available to the rest of the DX product. You will own the product direction and outcomes for Data Cloud, our connector ecosystem, core data integrity, and the data infrastructure behind our demo environment.
This is a deeply technical product role. You do not need to be an engineer, but you must be able to reason credibly about connectors, APIs, data models, database design, data lakes, reliability, enterprise data requirements, and data privacy/security. You will turn that understanding into a data platform that customers and internal product teams can trust.
Responsibilities
What you'll do
  • Set the vision, strategy, roadmap, and measurable outcomes for DX's Data Cloud and connector ecosystem.
  • Prioritize connector investments using customer demand, market context, strategic leverage, and the needs of downstream DX products.
  • Improve the end-to-end connector experience, including setup, authentication, configuration, data mapping, sync health, and troubleshooting.
  • Define product requirements for data quality, freshness, completeness, reliability, and transparency.
  • Partner closely with Engineering on the evolution of DX's unified data layer while maintaining a clear boundary between product direction and technical design.
  • Own the product capabilities that keep DX's demo environment representative, reliable, and useful.
  • Build a deep understanding of enterprise data environments, security constraints, integration patterns, and the teams responsible for them.
  • Shape ambiguous opportunities with lightweight specs, prototypes, and clear written context before the team commits to a solution.
  • Know how the platform is performing across connector adoption, time to value, reliability, and customer satisfaction; investigate problems and drive the right improvements.
  • Partner with customer-facing and go-to-market teams on connector discovery, pilots, launches, documentation, and positioning.

Compensation
At Atlassian, we strive to design equitable, explainable, and competitive compensation programs. We follow consistent hiring practices and account for each candidate's skills, knowledge, and experience when setting base pay within the range.
Please visit go.atlassian.com/payzones for more information on which locations are included in each of our geographic pay zones. However, please confirm the zone for your specific location with your recruiter.
This role may also be eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.
Pay Ranges
In The United States, we have three geographic pay zones. For this role, our current base pay ranges for new hires in each zone are:
Zone A: $168,300 - $219,725
Zone B: $151,470 - $197,753
Zone C: $139,689 - $182,372
Qualifications
What we're looking for
  • 5+ years of product management experience, with a track record of independently owning a technical product area.
  • Meaningful experience with data connectors, integrations, ETL/ELT systems, data platforms, or adjacent infrastructure products.
  • Strong working knowledge of APIs, data models, database design, and data lakes or warehouses.
  • Ability to engage deeply with engineers on architecture and tradeoffs while remaining focused on customer problems and product outcomes.
  • Understanding of the reliability, security, scalability, and trust requirements of enterprise data products.
  • Strong customer discovery, synthesis, prioritization, and written communication skills.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity, moving quickly, and making pragmatic tradeoffs without sacrificing quality or enterprise trust.

Nice to have
  • Experience building self-service connector or integration platforms.
  • Product experience in developer tools, data infrastructure, observability, or enterprise SaaS.
  • Experience serving data engineering, platform engineering, or developer productivity teams.
  • Experience in a fast-growing startup.
  • Firsthand experience using DX as a customer.

How Product works at DX
PMs at DX act as the compass and context engine for their product area. You will own product direction, prioritized problems, and outcomes; your Tech Lead partner will own sequencing, technical scope, and quality. We expect PMs to stay close to customers, synthesize context for the team, sprint ahead on ambiguous work with lightweight specs and mockups, and increase the team's speed of learning. We default to pragmatic, async written work rather than unnecessary process.
