What is an associate technical product manager?

Associate Technical Product Managers (Associate TPMs) are entry- to mid-level professionals who help plan, develop, and launch technology products. They work closely with cross-functional teams, such as engineering, design, and marketing, to gather requirements, prioritize features, and ensure products meet customer needs. Associate TPMs often assist senior product managers with project management, roadmap planning, and stakeholder communication. This role is a stepping stone to becoming a full Product Manager and provides valuable experience in both technical and business aspects of product development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate technical product manager?

To thrive as an Associate Technical Product Manager, you need a solid understanding of product development, technical concepts, and project management, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, product management tools like Jira or Trello, and experience with APIs or software development lifecycles are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help you bridge the gap between technical and non-technical teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering successful products that meet business goals and customer needs in a fast-paced environment.

How does an associate technical product manager typically collaborate with engineering and design teams during product development?

As an Associate Technical Product Manager, you will regularly work alongside engineering and design teams to translate product requirements into actionable tasks. This often involves facilitating sprint planning sessions, clarifying technical details, and ensuring that user stories are well-defined. You'll act as a liaison, helping to resolve roadblocks and ensuring that everyone stays aligned on project goals and timelines. Strong communication and organizational skills are key, as you'll need to balance feedback from cross-functional teams while keeping the product’s vision and roadmap in focus.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IN A TECHNICAL PRODUCT MANAGER
  • Experience as a Technical Product Manager, Product Manager, or Product Owner managing complex, platform-focused, or infrastructure-heavy products
  • Solid technical foundation
  • Ability to interpret system diagrams, discuss API structures, and understand data models (production coding not required)
  • Hands-on experience in a technical role, such as software engineering, data analysis, or systems architecture (preferred)

TECHNICAL PRODUCT MANAGER DAY-TO-DAY

As the Technical Product Manager, you will own the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for our core platform capabilities, backend integrations, and API frameworks. Each day, you will partner closely with Engineering leadership and Staff Engineers to balance technical debt, scalability initiatives, and infrastructure modernization with new feature requests. You will translate ambiguous business goals into detailed technical specifications, user stories, and system-level roadmaps.

Early in the product lifecycle, you will lead technical discovery, mapping dependencies, assessing risks, and validating system feasibility. Your day will include managing and prioritizing the backlog for our core platform engineering teams, ensuring requirements are well-defined and ready for execution. You will establish and monitor core platform metrics focused on system reliability, API performance, and data processing efficiency. Most importantly, you will act as the primary translator between deeply technical engineering teams and non-technical business units, ensuring product capabilities and limitations are clearly communicated.
