What is an associate student pastor?

Associate Student Pastors are church staff members who assist in leading and supporting the ministry specifically aimed at students, typically in middle school and high school. They work under the direction of the lead Student Pastor and help organize activities, teach lessons, mentor students, and build relationships with families. Their role often includes coordinating volunteers, planning events, and fostering a positive spiritual environment for youth. By supporting the spiritual growth of students, Associate Student Pastors play a vital part in the church's outreach and youth development.

What are some common challenges faced by an associate student pastor and how can they be addressed?

Associate Student Pastors often encounter challenges such as engaging a diverse group of students, balancing administrative tasks with ministry, and navigating sensitive topics relevant to youth. Building strong relationships with students, staying adaptable in programming, and maintaining open communication with parents and church leadership are key strategies for overcoming these challenges. Additionally, collaborating closely with the lead student pastor and other ministry staff ensures consistent support and shared resources, fostering a positive environment for both personal and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate student pastor?

To thrive as an Associate Student Pastor, you need a background in theology or ministry, experience working with youth, and often a relevant degree or pastoral certification. Familiarity with church management software, presentation tools, and social media platforms is typically required to engage and organize student programs. Strong interpersonal skills, leadership, and the ability to connect authentically with young people set exceptional candidates apart. These skills are crucial for fostering spiritual growth, building trust, and effectively managing youth ministry activities.

Job description

Associate Pastor of Children & Families

River City Community Church — Selma, TX (NE San Antonio)

Are you a passionate, mature christian leader who can inspire kids and their families to love Jesus and follow Him with joy? River City Community Church is looking for a full-time ministry pastor who’s ready to step into something meaningful — shaping the next generation to passionately follow Christ and live life on mission.  Our Associate Pastor of Children & Families leads a team of volunteer ministers to serve new borns through 5th grade with Sunday worship gatherings, and exciting weekly activities. Worship, biblical teaching, and small-group discipleship are at the heart of everything we do.

Who We’re Looking For

We want someone who doesn’t just manage a ministry — someone who leads with vision and energy.
Our ideal is a pastor who is:

  • A godly, growth-oriented leader with proven experience.
  • Someone who can multiply ministry, helping us grow and lead more people to be passionate followers of Christ.
  • Skilled at building and equipping teams, training volunteers and interns to lead with confidence.
  • A dynamic communicator, with a warm personality and a genuine love for kids and their families.
  • Someone who dreams big, plans well, and executes with excellence.

You won’t be doing this alone — you’ll join a strong, fully staffed team, partnering with our leadership in creating a life changing ministry environment.

What You’ll Lead

Weekly Rhythm & Events

  • Lead staff and volunteers to create fun, energetic, and spiritually engaging services and experiences — from weekly gatherings to VBS, camps, sports events and more.

Big-Picture Strategy

  • Develop a yearly ministry vision with clear strategies to help kids connect with God, grow in faith, and serve with their gifts.

Parent Partnership

  • Build strong relationships with parents so they feel equipped and encouraged to disciple their kids at home.

Team Development

  • Work closely with our ministry team to ensure consistent, meaningful discipleship for kids, students, and families throughout all milestone phases.

Our Ministry DNA

We believe discipleship starts early and continues throughout life. That’s why we focus on consistent small group leadership from preschool through adulthood — helping every child take real next steps in their faith.

We Take Care of You

Ministry is rewarding and demanding. At River City, you’ll be supported with:

  • Full benefits
  • Retirement matching
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Generous time-off & sick leave
  • Continuing education support
  • Tuition assistance for Pre-K through 12th grade at our Christian school
