Staff Attorney

Position Overview

The Staff Attorney provides legal counsel and support to the organization on a broad range of legal, regulatory, and operational matters, with a primary focus on contract development, negotiation, interpretation, and legal support for the organization's contracting operations. This position serves as a key legal resource to the Contracts team by drafting and negotiating complex agreements, developing maintaining templates and standard language, and providing timely legal guidance to Contracts Specialists responsible for day-to-day contract administration. The Staff Attorney partners with leadership and business units to identify legal risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and deliver practical, business-oriented legal solutions.

Essential Functions and SkillsResponsibilities
  • Serve as the primary legal advisor supporting the organization's contract lifecycle management process.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret a wide variety of agreements, including vendor, professional services, technology, confidentiality, business associate, and other commercial contracts
  • Develop, revise, and maintain contract templates, standard clauses, and negotiation playbooks to improve efficiency and consistency
  • Provide legal guidance and timely responses to Contracts Specialists regarding contract language, legal risk, negotiation strategies, and interpretation of contractual provisions to support daily contracting operations.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance on organizational, operational, and regulatory matters beyond contracting.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on litigation and specialized legal matters when necessary.
  • Conduct legal research and provide practical recommendations to leadership and operational teams
  • Monitor and respond to legal inquiries submitted through the organization's Legal inbox, providing timely legal guidance or directing matters to the appropriate legal resource or outside counsel as appropriate.
  • Serve as a legal resource for employees by responding to questions regarding legal issues, organizational policies, contractual matters, and other routine legal requests.
  • Review, analyze, and respond to subpoenas, court orders, and other legal requests for records or information to determine legal sufficiency, validity, and the organization's obligations to respond.
  • Partner with Compliance and Privacy to evaluate requests for protected health information (PHI), medical records, and other confidential information to ensure disclosures comply with HIPAA, state privacy laws, and other applicable legal requirements.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, including Health Information Management, Compliance, Privacy, Human Resources, and operational leaders, to facilitate appropriate responses to subpoenas and other legally authorized requests for documents.
  • Advise business partners on legal hold, records preservation, and document production requirements when applicable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law and good standing in the applicable state (or ability to obtain admission as required).
  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible legal experience, with significant experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts.
  • Ability to pass DHS background study.
  • Ability to explain legal concepts clearly to Contracts Specialists and operational staff with varying levels of legal knowledge.
  • Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Sound judgment and ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with legal, contracting, procurement, compliance, and business leaders.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling confidential information.

The starting salary range for this role is $115,000 - $120,000 annual base salary.  An employee’s actual annual salary will be based on but not limited to: geographic location, relevant education, applicable certifications, depth of experience, and special skillsets. The total compensation package for this position may also include the opportunity to participate in employee benefits including our medical/dental/vision/pet insurance, disability and life insurance, paid time off, and 401(k) retirement plans, subject to applicable plan terms, and/or eligibility for other compensation.
