What does an associate software engineer do?

An Associate Software Engineer is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software applications. They work closely under the supervision of more experienced engineers to write code, fix bugs, and contribute to software projects. This role typically involves learning company-specific technologies and best practices, collaborating with team members, and gradually taking on more complex tasks as skills develop.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), software development principles, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and issue tracking systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you collaborate and adapt in dynamic project environments. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering robust code, supporting team goals, and driving continuous improvement in software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Job description

About the Role
At Netsmart, we are building technology that helps healthcare providers deliver better care and meet critical compliance requirements. As a Software Engineer on our Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) team, you'll help design and develop the integrations that connect healthcare solutions, mobile applications, and data platforms across the care continuum.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer who enjoys problem-solving, backend development, and understanding how systems work together. Whether your Java experience comes from professional work, internships, research, or academic projects, you'll have the opportunity to apply and grow those skills while working on technology that directly impacts healthcare organizations and the patients they serve.
You'll collaborate with experienced engineers to build APIs, develop integration solutions, troubleshoot complex data flows, and deliver software that ensures critical healthcare information moves securely and accurately between systems.
What You'll Do
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, solution design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Design, develop, and maintain Java-based integration solutions that enable seamless communication between healthcare platforms and applications.
  • Build and enhance APIs, services, and data exchange workflows that support Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) and other healthcare interoperability initiatives.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve integration, data, and application issues through root cause analysis and debugging.
  • Develop and execute automated and manual tests to ensure software quality, reliability, and performance.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, code reviews, and technical design discussions.
  • Build knowledge of clinical, operational, and financial healthcare workflows and apply that knowledge to create impactful software solutions.
  • Continuously explore new technologies, tools, and engineering practices to improve development efficiency and solution quality.
  • Participate in a rotational on-call schedule after onboarding and training to help support business-critical applications.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, MIS, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience with Java through professional work, internships, co-ops, research projects, coursework, or personal projects.
  • Understanding of object-oriented programming principles and software development fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of relational databases, data modeling, and SQL.
  • Familiarity with APIs, system integrations, or data exchange concepts.
  • Understanding of cloud-based or SaaS application architectures.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly and apply them effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical internship with a software company, healthcare organization, or technology-focused team.
  • Experience working with Git, GitHub, Jira, or similar development tools.
  • Exposure to API development, REST services, integration platforms, or backend services.
  • Interest in healthcare technology, interoperability, or connected software systems.
