Job description

About BRINC:

At BRINC, we are redefining public safety with an innovative ecosystem of life-saving tools. Our journey started with the development of drones and ruggedized throw phones, designed to access unsafe areas and establish communication to deโ€‘escalate situations. Today, we've expanded into creating and deploying 911 response networks, where drones are dispatched to 911 calls to provide realโ€‘time visual data, enhancing safety and enabling deโ€‘escalationโ€‘focused responses. Our cuttingโ€‘edge solutions are utilized by over 600 public safety agencies across America and the company has raised over $150M from investors, including Index Ventures, Motorola Solutions, Sam Altman, Dylan Field, Mike Volpe, Alexandr Wang and more. At BRINC, we are committed to recruiting the world's best talent to join us in our mission to support first responders in saving lives.

About this Role:

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer, Test (SDET) to own quality engineering and test automation for BRINC's Web Platform and Services, our cloud product suite known as LiveOps. LiveOps powers Drone as a First Responder (DFR) programs with live video streaming, teleoperation, fleet management, data management, thirdโ€‘party integrations, and a growing set of missionโ€‘critical capabilities. In this role, you will design and build the automated testing frameworks, infrastructure, and quality processes that ensure first responders can depend on LiveOps to respond to 911 calls within seconds. Reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, Web Platform, you will partner closely with backend, frontend, cloud, device software, and autonomy teams to define test strategy, surface issues before they reach production, and raise the quality bar across the platform. Engineering roles at BRINC require a high level of ownership and initiative, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and solve complex, undefined problems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain automated test frameworks and suites that provide API, integration, and endโ€‘toโ€‘end coverage across the LiveOps web platform and backend services.

  • Own endโ€‘toโ€‘end and regression testing for core LiveOps features, including live video streaming, teleoperation, fleet management, data management, and thirdโ€‘party integrations.

  • Validate IAM and security controls across the platform, including Amazon Cognito, multiโ€‘tenant authentication and authorization, and Lambda authorizers, to support SOCโ€ฏ2 compliance and safeguard sensitive public safety data.

  • Validate machine learning and computer vision model outputs from BRINC's autonomy stack, including object detection, segmentation, and classification models, testing output correctness, confidence thresholds, and regression behavior across model versions.

  • Validate health monitoring and observability, exercising alerting pipelines, DynamoDB Streams, and CloudWatch alarm behavior to ensure failures are detected and surfaced in production.

  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines to deliver fast, reliable quality feedback and gate releases into production.

  • Build and maintain test infrastructure, environments, and test data to enable repeatable, highโ€‘quality testing.

  • Design and execute performance, load, and reliability testing for realโ€‘time, lowโ€‘latency services such as live video streaming and teleoperation.

  • Partner with backend, frontend, cloud, and device software engineers to define test strategy and acceptance criteria, shifting quality earlier in the development cycle.

  • Triage failures, perform rootโ€‘cause analysis, track defects, and produce clear quality metrics and releaseโ€‘readiness reports, while championing testing and quality best practices across the team.

Qualifications:
  • 5โ€‘12 years of experience in software test engineering, SDET, or quality engineering, building automated testing for web and cloud platforms.

  • Strong programming skills in TypeScript and Python, with the ability to write and maintain productionโ€‘quality test code.

  • Handsโ€‘on experience building web and API test automation with Playwright, including endโ€‘toโ€‘end suites built from the ground up and reporting frameworks that clearly surface results.

  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, working comfortably in Linux and bash environments.

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and testing distributed, serviceโ€‘based architectures.

  • Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering teams and influence quality practices.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a similar field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience testing realโ€‘time or streaming systems, such as live video (WebRTC/RTSP), WebSockets, or lowโ€‘latency data pipelines.

  • Experience standing up endโ€‘toโ€‘end test automation from scratch in a highly ambiguous, fastโ€‘paced environment such as a startup.

  • Experience testing cloud platforms that interact with hardware, IoT, or robotics devices.

  • Experience with performance and load testing tools (e.g., k6, JMeter, Locust, or Gatling).

  • Experience validating thirdโ€‘party API integrations and contract testing.

  • Background in the drone, robotics, UAV, or public safety domain.

  • Experience testing serverless architectures, particularly AWS Lambda and DynamoDB Streams.

  • SOCโ€ฏ2 or other security compliance awareness, including experience testing in regulated or audited environments.

BRINC Culture Values:
  • Try the hard stuff

  • Be innovative โ€“ Invent the future

  • Move fast

  • Listen to endโ€‘users

  • Strive for excellence

  • Donโ€™t build a dystopia

  • Be frugal

  • Save lives through technology
