What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Software Engineer, Full Stack (Java)
We are not accepting C2C or 1099 arrangements.
Location: Charlotte, NC (CIC)
Work Model: Hybrid (3 days/week onsite, Monday-Wednesday preferred)
Employment Type: Contract (18 months with potential extension or conversion)
About the Role
We're seeking a highly skilled Full Stack Software Engineer to help modernize and transform a critical credit card servicing platform. This role is part of a large-scale migration initiative, moving from a legacy .NET ecosystem to a modern architecture leveraging Java, React, MongoDB, Kubernetes, and cloud-native technologies.
As an engineer on the team, you'll design, develop, and deploy scalable applications that directly support business-critical operations. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable solutions through bi-weekly releases while helping establish operational best practices for a next-generation platform.
What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain full-stack applications using Java and React.
  • Contribute to the migration of enterprise applications from legacy .NET platforms to modern Java-based architectures.
  • Build and optimize RESTful services, APIs, and microservices.
  • Develop scalable front-end experiences using React and modern web technologies.
  • Work with MongoDB and other data technologies to build performant and resilient applications.
  • Deploy and manage applications within Kubernetes/OpenShift environments.
  • Partner with product owners, architects, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
  • Participate in bi-weekly production releases.
  • Support release activities and contribute to an on-call rotation as the platform evolves.
  • Apply engineering best practices, automation, and operational excellence to improve system reliability and performance.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience developing applications with Java (Java 15 or newer preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience building front-end applications using React.
  • 3+ years of experience working with MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases.
  • Experience deploying applications to Kubernetes, OpenShift, or comparable container orchestration platforms.
  • Experience building or supporting Business Process Management solutions such as:
    • IBM BPM
    • Pega
    • Azure Logic Apps
    • Similar workflow automation platforms
  • Strong understanding of software design, development, testing, and deployment practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with .NET development and the ability to support legacy applications during modernization efforts.
  • Experience with AI prompt engineering, generative AI implementations, or development of AI playbooks/frameworks.
  • Experience with AutoSys or enterprise job scheduling platforms.
  • Experience working in large, highly regulated enterprise environments.
  • Exposure to cloud-native architectures and modernization initiatives.
What Makes You Successful
  • You can clearly connect technical decisions to measurable business outcomes.
  • You have experience modernizing legacy systems and navigating complex technology transformations.
  • You are comfortable working across both established and emerging technologies.
  • You thrive in collaborative environments and embrace accountability for production systems.
  • You communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Additional Information
  • Hybrid work schedule with 3 mandatory onsite days per week in Charlotte, NC.
  • Release support may occasionally require availability on Monday or Tuesday evenings.
  • An on-call rotation will be established as the new platform is implemented.
  • Work schedules will be adjusted to support release and on-call responsibilities without requiring overtime.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The strongest candidates will bring a blend of modern Java engineering and legacy .NET experience, with approximately:
  • 60% Java / modern-stack expertise
  • 40% .NET background

This balance supports both the current modernization effort and ongoing platform migration activities. Candidates should demonstrate recent Java experience and be able to articulate the business impact of the technologies and solutions they have delivered throughout their careers.
