What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Is 25 too late to become a software engineer?

The associate software engineer role is open to individuals of various ages, and starting a career at 25 is common. Many successful software engineers begin in their mid-20s or later, often after gaining skills through coding bootcamps, online courses, or degree programs. Age is generally not a barrier if you develop relevant skills and gain practical experience.

What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

Job description

Associate/Experienced Software Engineer-Developer (Development)

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing SIWS Daybreak is hiring a hands-on engineer to develop and operate missioncritical infrastructure and automated delivery for our software platform in Kent, WA. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining repeatable, secure, and observable environments that support our production mission. You will write and test code that provisions infrastructure, pipelines, and deployment artifacts - be directly accountable for their reliability in production - and empower teams by delivering tooling as a service.

Core responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK to provision AWS accounts, VPCs, networking, IAM, and other cloud resources in a repeatable and auditable manner. Supports the design, development, test, and maintenance of non-embedded software throughout the end-to-end lifecycle that meets industry, customer, safety, and regulation standards.
  • Build, operate, and harden CI/CD pipelines to deploy services and serverless functions into development, staging, and production environments with automated testing and policy enforcement. Assists with review, analysis and translation of customer requirements into initial design of software products.
  • Containerize applications using Docker and author/maintain Helm charts (or equivalent packaging) for reproducible deployments. Supports development, maintenance, enhancement and optimization of software products and functionalities for systems integrations.
  • Implement environment bootstrapping and teardown automation so teams can create consistent, shortlived test and integration environments. Supports development, documentation and maintenance of architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software products.
  • Deliver and operate internal developer-facing platforms and tooling as a service (TaaS): self-service infrastructure, deployment, observability, and security controls that let product teams move faster with confidence. Participates in handling user inquiries, troubleshooting technical issues and user feedback analysis.
  • Define, collect, and improve delivery and reliability metrics (DORA metrics: lead time, deployment frequency, MTTR, change failure rate) and other KPIs; translate metrics into actionable improvements. Supports development, establishment, monitoring and improvement of software processes, tools and key performance metrics that align projects with organizational goals and industry benchmarks.
  • Integrate security and compliance controls into the delivery pipeline and infrastructure (SAST/SCA/DAST, secrets management, IAM policies, auditing). Supports implementation of current and emerging technologies, tools, frameworks and changes in regulations relevant to software development.
  • Operate and troubleshoot missioncritical runtime and deployment issues; perform root cause analysis and implement preventive measures. Supports debugging and resolution of issues identified to ensure the reliability and efficiency of software products.
  • Provide developer-facing support, documentation, training, and graduated access to the TaaS platform to enable teams to build, deliver, and operate systems confidently. Supports execution and documentation of software research and development projects.
  • Engage directly with end users and stakeholders: gather feedback, present solutions to customers, and iterate on platform features based on real-world usage and needs. Assists with performing software project management activities and software supplier management functions.
  • Evaluate and adopt tools, practices, and automation patterns that improve availability, resilience, security, and maintainability of production systems. Supports tracking and evaluation of software team and supplier performance to ensure product and process compliance to project plans and industry standards.

What success looks like

  • Missioncritical systems provisioned and deployed reliably through automated pipelines and self-service platforms.
  • Repeatable and auditable infrastructure lifecycle managed via code and version control.
  • Measurable improvement in delivery performance and system reliability using DORA metrics.
  • Security and compliance checks integrated into CI/CD and infrastructure automation.
  • Clear documentation, and reduced time-to-resolution for production incidents.
  • Product teams empowered to self-serve environments and deployments with measurable reductions in lead time and operational friction.
  • Positive feedback from internal users and customers driven by TaaS improvements and direct engagement.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • This role requires an Active U.S. Top Secret with SCI Clearance eligibility
  • 1+ years software development experience
  • 1+ years hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS or equivalent).
  • 1+ years practical experience with containerization.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code concepts and at least introductory experience with tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK
  • Basic experience with CI/CD systems

Preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science and 2+ years of related work experience OR Bachelor's Degree and 6+ years of directly related work experience OR 10+ years of related, relevant experience
  • Level 3: 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with serverless or container orchestration
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools
  • Prior exposure to regulated, safety-critical, or aerospace environments. teams.
  • Understanding of delivery and reliability metrics (DORA or equivalent) and a desire to instrument and improve them.
  • Good troubleshooting and incident response mindset for production systems.
  • Clear communication skills and willingness to support teams and present to stakeholders and customers.
