What is an associate software engineer?

An associate software engineer works with a team of engineering professionals and developers to improve existing software or design new applications. As an associate software engineer, your job duties include coding software, coordinating with hardware engineers to ensure that different types of technology can run the software, and helping the QA team to test software before release. Typical qualifications for the career include a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field and relevant technical experience with software applications. You also need excellent communication, coding, and analytical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

What are some common challenges faced by associate software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Associate Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to larger, more complex codebases and learning to work within established development workflows. Unlike academic projects, real-world development involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, adhering to coding standards, and following agile processes. Additionally, balancing learning new technologies with delivering features on tight deadlines can be demanding. However, support from mentors and structured onboarding programs usually helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, as well as experience using version control systems like Git, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable software solutions, collaborating within development teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies.

Description

Lead the Way to Intelligent Banking with Us!

You might not think about what happens behind the scenes when you check your bank balance or deposit a check from your phone, but we do. Every day.

Kinective empowers banks and credit unions to move beyond keeping up with technology to shaping the future of banking. Our platform seamlessly connects the right tools, delivers real-time data, and drives smarter operations for more than 4,000 financial institutions nationwide. We are a fast-growing team built on individual ownership, company-wide collaboration, and setting industry-leading standards. Here, new ideas are encouraged, candid feedback is welcomed, and your growth truly matters as much as the company's. At Kinective, we are leading the way to intelligent banking together and enjoying the journey along the way.

Why This Role Matters

Every role at Kinective exists to move the needle for our clients, partners, and the financial institutions we serve. As the Associate Software Engineer, you will contribute to building and maintaining reliable software that helps Kinective deliver intelligent banking solutions, enabling financial institutions to operate more efficiently and serve their customers with confidence.

You will take ownership of assigned stories, bug fixes, and technical tasks while partnering with engineers, architects, QA, product, and support to turn priorities into well-tested, maintainable results.

What you'll own

Build and maintain software

Implement modular, maintainable code in software applications by following technical design documents and sprint stories.

Maintain existing product lines through functional enhancements, bug fixes, code optimization, and related improvements with appropriate guidance.

Create and update unit or integration tests, investigate defects, and escalate risks or blockers early.

Collaborate through Agile delivery

Participate in planning, refinement, estimation, stand-ups, retrospectives, and code reviews to support predictable delivery.

Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical partners to clarify requirements, share progress, and deliver solutions.

Assume ownership of assigned feature stories and tasks while seeking feedback from senior engineers and the System Architect.

Learn and apply engineering practices

Build practical knowledge of the software development life cycle, Agile practices, object-oriented design, microservices, and relational and non-relational databases.

Adapt to new technologies in support of project needs and direction from senior engineers and the System Architect.

Develop solution-focused proofs of concept or technical evaluations when requested and communicate appropriate recommendations.

Support quality, documentation, and customers

Keep technical documentation current as requirements and sprint deliverables change.

Provide second-level support for technical support staff by helping investigate customer issues and contributing to root-cause resolution.

Share knowledge, participate in cross-training, and contribute to a respectful, collaborative team environment.

How We'll Measure Success

Delivering assigned stories, enhancements, and bug fixes with quality and within agreed sprint commitments.

Demonstrating steady growth in software development practices and familiarity with the systems supported by the team.

Participating constructively in code reviews, Agile ceremonies, technical discussions, and cross-functional collaboration.

Troubleshooting with resourcefulness and attention to detail, asking for help when appropriate, and communicating risks early.

Keeping tests and documentation current while helping the team provide reliable support for customers.

Success here isn't about checking boxes - it's about propelling Kinective's mission to lead the way to intelligent banking. You must bring excellence to your craft, balance resourcefulness with respect, share and celebrate unique expertise and diverse perspectives, and continuously raise the bar as we innovate and grow.

Requirements

Experience using Git for source control, branching, and collaborative development.

Foundational understanding of object-oriented programming, the software development life cycle, and Agile practices.

Basic knowledge of relational and non-relational databases.

Ability to follow a technical design document and implement code from written stories and tasks.

Ability to troubleshoot issues under time-sensitive conditions while maintaining attention to detail.

Clear communication skills and a willingness to learn, receive feedback, and collaborate across teams.
