What is an associate science?

Associate Science jobs typically refer to positions that require an Associate of Science (AS) degree, which is a two-year undergraduate degree focused on foundational science and math courses. Graduates often work as laboratory technicians, research assistants, environmental science technicians, or healthcare support roles. These jobs provide hands-on experience in scientific settings and can serve as a stepping stone to a bachelor's degree or higher-level positions in science-related fields.

What does an associate science do?

Associate Science professionals in laboratory settings are commonly tasked with preparing and analyzing samples, maintaining lab equipment, and documenting experimental results. They often collaborate closely with senior scientists and research teams to ensure experiments run smoothly and data is accurately recorded. Regular responsibilities may also include participating in team meetings to discuss findings and troubleshoot issues, as well as adhering to strict safety protocols. This collaborative and detail-oriented environment provides valuable experience for those looking to advance in scientific research careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate scientist?

To thrive as an Associate Scientist, you need a solid background in biological or chemical sciences, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with laboratory techniques, data analysis software, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate experimentation, reliable results, and effective collaboration within research teams.

What is the difference between Associate Science vs Laboratory Technician?

While both roles require an associate degree, Associate Science professionals often work in educational or research settings, focusing on scientific education and research. Laboratory Technicians typically work in clinical or industrial labs, performing tests and supporting scientific experiments. The main difference lies in their work environment and specific job functions, though both roles share similar educational requirements.

What can I do with just an associate science degree?

An Associate Science degree prepares individuals for entry-level roles in fields such as laboratory technician, research assistant, pharmacy technician, or quality control analyst. These positions often require knowledge of scientific methods, basic lab equipment, and sometimes certification or on-the-job training.

Job description

At Regeneron Genetic Medicines, we are driven by a mission to transform the treatment of serious diseases through groundbreaking genetic therapies. Our team is at the forefront of innovation, applying cutting-edge science to improve patient outcomes and redefine the future of medicine.

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Senior Associate Scientist to join the RGM R&D Chemistry team with a focus on oligomer and oligonucleotide synthesis, purification, and analytical characterization. The successful candidate will support the design and execution of solid-phase synthesis workflows, contribute to the preparation of modified RNA-related materials, and generate high-quality analytical data to guide platform research and development. This role offers an opportunity to work at the interface of synthetic chemistry, analytical characterization, and RNA therapeutic innovation while contributing to programs that may meaningfully advance future medicines.

What You'll Do:

Sr. Associate Scientist focused on oligomer synthesis and characterization:

  • Execute solid-phase oligomer and oligonucleotide synthesis using automated synthesis platforms, including preparation of reagents, setup of synthesis cycles, incorporation of standard and chemically modified amidites, and on-bead or post-synthetic modifications as needed.
  • Support synthesis of RNA-related constructs of varied lengths, formats, and chemical modification to enable discovery, platform development, and cross-functional program needs.
  • Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot synthetic workflows to improve yield, purity, reproducibility, and process efficiency.
  • Perform purification of synthesized oligomers using appropriate chromatographic techniques, including size-exclusion, anion-exchange, reverse-phase, and ion-pair reverse-phase methods.
  • Characterize purified materials using analytical methods such as LC-MS, HPLC/UPLC, UV-Vis, and other orthogonal techniques to confirm identity, purity, concentration, and product quality.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results, summarize findings clearly, and recommend next steps to support iterative chemistry design and platform advancement.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely experimental records in accordance with laboratory standards, safety expectations, and internal documentation practices.
  • Support routine operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and inventory management for key synthesis and analytical instrumentation, reagents, and laboratory supplies.
  • Collaborate effectively with chemists, biologists, analytical scientists, and project teams to advance RGM Chemistry objectives and communicate technical progress in team discussions.

Let's Find Out If We're a Fit:

  • B.S. in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, biology, or a related scientific discipline is required; Masters degree is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years with BS / 3 years with MS in relevant undergraduate research, internship, or industry experience required.
  • Hands-on experience with solid-phase organic synthesis is preferred, particularly oligonucleotide, peptide, oligomer, or related polymer/biopolymer synthesis workflows.
  • Nice to have - familiarity with automated synthesis platforms such as MerMade, OligoSynt, or comparable oligonucleotide/oligomer synthesizers is highly desirable. Experience with purification and analytical characterization methods, including SEC, AEX, RP-HPLC or RPIP-HPLC, and LC-MS.
