What is an associate RF engineer?

Associate RF Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of radio frequency (RF) systems and equipment. They typically work under the supervision of senior RF engineers to help optimize wireless communication networks, troubleshoot signal issues, and ensure regulatory compliance. Their duties may include performing site surveys, analyzing RF coverage, and supporting the deployment of wireless infrastructure. This role often requires a background in electrical engineering or a related field, and familiarity with RF testing tools and software.

What are some typical challenges an associate RF engineer may face when working on wireless network projects?

As an Associate RF Engineer, you may encounter challenges such as optimizing signal coverage in complex environments, mitigating interference between frequency bands, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Working closely with senior engineers and field technicians, you'll frequently analyze drive test data, adjust network parameters, and troubleshoot coverage gaps. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential, as projects often require input from design, operations, and customer support to deliver reliable and efficient wireless networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate RF engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate RF Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, RF principles, and telecommunications, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with RF simulation tools (like CST or HFSS), spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring reliable wireless system performance and successful project delivery in complex technical environments.

What is the difference between Associate Rf Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectAssociate Rf EngineerRF Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; some certificationsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; often more experience
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, team-based projects, testing, and troubleshootingMore independent, involved in design, optimization, and deployment
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in RF testing, data collection, and basic troubleshootingDesigning RF systems, performance analysis, and advanced troubleshooting

The main difference between an Associate Rf Engineer and an RF Engineer lies in experience and responsibility level. Associate Rf Engineers typically handle entry-level tasks such as testing and data collection, while RF Engineers are more involved in system design and optimization. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but RF Engineers usually have more industry experience and take on more complex projects.

Job description

As a Lead Engineer Technician II here at Honeywell, you will support the MMIC Technology Center (MTC), which develops advanced RF solutions using state-of-the-art MMIC and packaging technologies. The organization integrates program management, test development, production test, product support engineering, and RF systems expertise to transition designs into deliverable products and inform system architecture trade studies.
This role operates within a small, collaborative team focused on developing GaN/GaAs MMIC technologies for defense electronics applications, including ground and airborne radar, electronic warfare, and space systems spanning L-band through Ka-band and above.
Key responsibilities include setup, calibration, and testing of MMICs and multi-chip modules (MCMs) using advanced equipment such as Keysight PNA-X network analyzers; RF test and troubleshooting of assemblies with minimal supervision; design of test fixtures; execution of detailed design verification, qualification, and environmental stress testing; and complex failure analysis. The position also involves close collaboration with engineering to document technical findings, support product development, and ensure successful transition to production. Additional duties include lab asset management and precision work under microscopes.
You will report directly to our Engineering Program Manager, and you'll work out of our Richardson, TX location onsite.
Responsibilities
  • Perform RF characterization of MMICs and MCMs, including power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, and signal control devices
  • Set up and calibrate test equipment; execute S-parameter, output power, noise figure, and two-tone measurements
  • Conduct on-wafer testing and support the design, build, and assembly of RF test fixtures
  • Perform light RF/microwave assembly work, including wire bonding of test assemblies
  • Troubleshoot complex RF circuits and assemblies independently using strong diagnostic and analytical skills
  • Execute failure analysis, contribute to statistical analysis, and document results in clear technical reports
  • Maintain test documentation, ensuring traceability, procedural compliance, and data integrity
  • Manage lab operations, including equipment calibration tracking, vendor coordination, procurement support, and continuous improvement aligned with emerging RF technologies.

Qualifications
YOU MUST HAVE
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 8+ years of RF experience
  • 6+ years of advanced proficiency with RF/microwave test equipment, including vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies, and calibration standards
  • 6+ years of deep expertise in S-parameters, large-signal measurements, linearity, noise figure, spurious characterization, and RF troubleshooting techniques
  • 6+ years performing precision work under a microscope with sub-micron geometries
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and work from schematics, layouts, and technical drawings
  • Demonstrated mastery of electronics theory and principles, with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

WE VALUE
  • Associates or bachelor's degree in Electronics Technology, Engineering, or a related field
  • 10+ years of RF experience, supported by a certificate or associate degree in Electronics Technology, or equivalent experience with a high school diploma/GED
  • Proficiency in RF characterization of GaN/GaAs MMICs, including S-parameters, large-signal, two-tone, stability testing, and measurements through Ka-band
  • Experience supporting the design of RF test fixtures and printed circuit boards (PCBs)
  • Working knowledge of programming or scripting (e.g., Python) for test automation and data analysis
  • Familiarity with CAD and design tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Gerber viewers
  • Experience with DoD/military qualification and environmental test requirements.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across teams, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in fast-paced environments

Due to compliance with U.S. export control laws and regulations, candidate must be a U.S. person, which is defined as, a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, or have protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status.
