Job Description This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Subsistence is recruiting for a Subsistence Resource Specialist 2/3 located in Fairbanks, Alaska.
What You Will Be Doing: The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Subsistence, is looking for a Subsistence Resource Specialist 2/3 Flex incumbent to join our Subsistence Division team. This is a permanent position that will support Northern Region subsistence research projects across the Northern Region of Alaska, with particular focus on the Interior/Yukon River region of the state. The incumbent will assist with the development, planning, implementation, and reporting on the human dimensions of subsistence activities and regulation in Interior Alaska.
This work involves fieldwork in remote communities using social science research methods such as household surveys, oral history documentation, mapping, and participant observation. Research topics include, but are not limited to, community responses to salmon declines, potlatch practices, sharing and social network analysis. The incumbents will work closely with Program Managers and other Subsistence Resource Specialists assigned to Northern Region projects to ensure quality and timely completion of priority tasks.
This position will require strong technical writing skills that will be applied to the drafting of technical reports on an annual basis. The incumbent may also assist with researching and preparing materials for regulatory review and research grant writing. This is a flex 2/3 postion.
Depending on qualifications of the selected applicant, this position may be hired as a Subsistence Resource Specialist 2 level. If this occurs, a training plan will be developed upon hire with the intention that the incumbent will flex up to a Subsistence Resource Specialist 3 within a 9-12 month period. Ultimately, a Subsistence Resource Specialist 3 is fully responsible for leading, designing, and coordinating all the research, and corresponding reporting, that occurs in their subregion.

The Working Environment You Can Expect: This position is located at the 1300 College Rd Fairbanks office location of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The incumbents will regularly interact with members of the public in a research capacity, coordinating with rural communities to plan, implement, and review research; conducting fieldwork to collect harvest or traditional knowledge data; and with colleagues at ADF&G or other agencies regarding the management of Alaska's subsistence resources.
Daily work environment spans from report writing, data analysis, interacting with stakeholders, addressing regulatory questions, and developing research proposals and questions/approaches. Fieldwork typically requires travel in small planes and boats away from the duty station for 1-2 weeks at a time multiple times per year. Who We Are Looking For: We are looking for an energetic and committed professional who has: Knowledge of subsistence in Alaska and a working knowledge of Alaska's diverse communities.
Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines and carry out tasks in a timely fashion. Experience collecting data using established social science methods, working with databases, preparing data analyses and summaries, writing research proposals, and writing technical or peer-reviewed reports and preparing presentations. Experience addressing public inquires on wildlife issues or regulatory requirements using good oral and written communication skills (i.e., explaining subsistence regulations, etc.) while working in rural Alaska
Familiarity and experience with standard office computing equipment and software, including Microsoft Office and Windows. Firearms training upon hire. Minimum Qualifications Subsistence Resource Specialist 2 A Bachelor's degree in anthropology, sociology, geography, or a closely related field. AND One year of experience performing professional subsistence resource research at the entry level.
This experience is equivalent to Subsistence Resource Specialist 1 with the State of Alaska. Special Note: Research may be on subsistence issues, for baseline studies of resource use, the impact of regional industrial growth on subsistence uses or, the development of fishing and hunting regulations. Subsistence Resource Specialist 3 A Bachelor's degree in anthropology, sociology, geography or closely related field.
AND Three years of professional experience performing subsistence studies and/or research including two years at the journey level. This specific experience is equivalent to a Subsistence Resource Specialist 2 with the State of Alaska. Substitution: A Master's degree as described above will substitute for one year of the nonspecific experience.
Special Note: Research may address subsistence issues, baseline studies of wildlife uses, the impact of regional and industrial growth on subsistence uses and, the development of fish and hunting regulations.
