Job description

Job Summary

The GIS Platform Owner is responsible for the strategic ownership, governance, and continuous improvement of Flywheel Energy’s Geographic Information System (GIS) platform. Reporting to the Director of IT, this role serves as the primary liaison between IT and operational business units to ensure GIS tools, data, and capabilities effectively support land, operations, engineering, and environmental functions. The ideal candidate combines deep GIS expertise with strong business acumen and a passion for building scalable, data-driven systems in a fast-moving energy company.

 

Key Responsibilities

  1. GIS Platform Ownership & Governance
    Serve as the product owner for the enterprise GIS platform, including Esri ArcGIS (Online, Pro, Enterprise) and related tools. Define and maintain the GIS platform roadmap aligned with business priorities. Establish and enforce data standards, naming conventions, and metadata governance. Manage platform licensing, access controls, and vendor relationships.
  2. GIS Data Management & Quality
    Oversee the integrity, accuracy, and accessibility of Corporate GIS datasets including well locations, pipelines, land boundaries, permits, and environmental features. Develop and maintain data workflows for ingestion, transformation, and publishing of spatial data. Collaborate with land, operations, and engineering teams to ensure GIS data supports critical business decisions.
  3. User Enablement & Training
    Provide training, documentation, and support to GIS users across the organization. Champion GIS adoption by identifying opportunities where spatial analysis can solve business problems. Build and maintain a community of practice around GIS within Flywheel.
  4. Project & Vendor Management
    Manage GIS-related projects and enhancements end-to-end, coordinating with IT, vendors, and business stakeholders. Define requirements, set timelines, track deliverables, and report on progress to the Director of IT. Manage third-party GIS service providers and software vendors to ensure quality and value.
  5. GIS Strategy

Partners with Technology and the business to set and execute the long term GIS strategy, with a focus on AI integration into geospacial tooling.

Required Qualifications
  1. Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience with Esri ArcGIS platform (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or ArcGIS Enterprise).
  2. Education: Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  3. Proficiency in spatial data management, geodatabase design, and data quality best practices.
  4. Experience integrating GIS with enterprise business systems (e.g., ERP, land management, SCADA).
  5. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to translate spatial data into business insights.
  6. Effective communication skills with the ability to work across technical and non-technical audiences.
  7. Experience owning a platform or technology product, including roadmap management and stakeholder prioritization.
  8. Familiarity with oil and gas operations, land, or environmental data domains.
  9. Willingness to provide occasional after-hours support as needed.
  10. Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise administration, including Portal, Server, and DataStore configuration.
  2. 5+ years of experience in the upstream oil and gas industry.
  3. Experience with Python, SQL, or FME for spatial data automation and ETL workflows.
  4. Esri technical certifications (e.g., EADP, Desktop Associate/Professional) or equivalent.
  5. History of technical evangelism and executing change projects within an enterprise.
