Job description

Your Opportunity
In this role, you will apply buildings mechanical engineering principles and communication skills to deliver project excellence to the communities we live, work, and play in. You will collaborate with architects, civil, electrical, and structural engineers to closely coordinate design solutions and present these to our clients. Our team is looking for a Mechanical Engineer with a focus in HVAC and Plumbing design. You will work with direct supervision and general direction on tasks and smaller projects, and as a team member of larger projects under the guidance of a Senior Engineer/Designer. You will assist in evaluating, selecting, specifying, and engineering certain Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) building systems for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and internal engineering standards / practices. You will work in in conjunction with the design team from conceptual design through construction documents on the design of several types of plumbing and industrial waste systems. Specific to the design of these systems the ideal candidate must be able to design, size, select, schedule, and specify HVAC and plumbing system components and equipment. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include Revit modeling, preparing design drawings, performing system calculations, ductwork design, piping design, specifying equipment, field survey work, and construction administration.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Apply mechanical engineering skills, experience and knowledge to the design and oversight of the design, for building projects.
  • Acquire assigned workflow to produce the design documentation, drawings, and calculations required for mechanical engineering projects.
  • Sharing knowledge with others by serving as a resource.
  • Meets technical, contractual, schedule, budgetary and client service objectives for each project.
  • Develops project related client presentations.
  • Maintains and expands current knowledge of technologies and trends, as they apply to the applicable project and market types and continually strengthens skills.
  • Attend client project meetings.
  • Apply buildings engineering and project management knowledge to meet project requirements within established time frames and budgets.
  • Able to perform water, waste, gas calculations as well as product specifications.
  • Coordinate and prepare schematic design, design development, and construction documents.
  • Design plumbing systems including water, sanitary, storm, diesel distribution, and natural gas distribution systems.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Designing HVAC and plumbing systems for facilities and built environments.
  • Position requires the ability to travel both domestically & internationally.
  • Requisite knowledge, interpretation, and application of Building codes and NFPA standards. Familiarity with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with, and ability to produce, project-related documents and documentation standards.
  • Ability to integrate design elements with other disciplines to deliver a coordinated design.
  • Familiarity with and ability to apply sustainable design principles.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with owners, other disciplines involved in the project, contractors, suppliers, etc.
  • Ability to apply logic, reasoning, and organizational skills to structure concepts and ideas into projects.
  • Requisite knowledge, interpretation, and application of the mechanical and/or plumbing codes, energy codes, ASHRAE standards, and other building codes.
  • Proficiency of and ability to use standard computer applications including, but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit,
  • Ability to create building energy models and analyze the life cycle cost analysis using NIST BLCC5 software.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use software for heating/cooling load calculations, either Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, IES, or equivalent.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited curriculum in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the buildings design industry preferred.
  • Preferred candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP is preferred.
  • Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range:
Locations in MN, OH, VT, & Various CA, ME, NY, VA Areas-$90,900.00 - $131,800.00 Annually
Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ Areas-$100,000.00 - $145,000.00 Annually
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave. Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).
Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
