Job description

Responsibilities
ECS is seeking a Building Enclosure Project Associate to join our Mid-AtlanticBuilding Science & Infrastructure team in Roanoke, VA In this role, you will support building enclosure consulting projects through a combination of field investigations, testing, technical analysis, and report preparation. You will collaborate with experienced consultants and multidisciplinary project teams to evaluate building envelope performance, support construction quality, and deliver practical solutions for clients across a variety of facility types. This position offers strong opportunities for hands-on field experience, technical growth, and mentorship within a collaborative consulting environment.
Responsibilities
Technical & Field Work
  • Perform building science & infrastructure related testing, inspections, and consulting services.
  • Conduct site observations and inspections of roofing and building enclosure systems.
  • Interpret drawings, figures, and site plans; assist with drafting or CAD work when needed.
  • Perform building enclosure testing and assist with development of testing protocols and test plans.
  • Interpret test results, identify deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist with forensic assessments, commissioning activities, and building enclosure investigations.
  • Assist with design reviews, repair design for existing building envelope components, and peer review of specifications and submittals.
  • Maintain familiarity with building codes and standards including IBC, ASHRAE, ASTM, and CSI.

Project Management
  • Support management of multiple building science & infrastructure projects simultaneously.
  • Coordinate site activities and communicate with field staff, subcontractors, and senior managers.
  • Assist with proposals, change orders, project budgets, and invoices.
  • Monitor project progress and communicate schedule updates, testing activities, and potential budget impacts.

Client Interaction & Team Collaboration
  • Interface with clients regularly and participate in project meetings and discussions.
  • Communicate project milestones and follow up on reports or project findings.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and support development of junior staff.

Documentation & Reporting
  • Prepare clear technical reports summarizing observations, testing results, and recommendations.
  • Ensure reports and documentation meet professional standards for accuracy and clarity.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Architecture (NCARB), or a related field.
  • 2+ years of related experience with building enclosure consulting, including field investigations, testing, commissioning (BECx), design review, or forensic assessments.
  • Licensed or certified in at least one of the following preferred but not required:
    • Professional Engineer (P.E.)
    • Registered Architect (R.A.)
    • IIBEC certifications (RRC, RWC, REWC, RBEC, CBECxP)
    • University of Wisconsin-Madison certifications (BECxP, CxA+BE

Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of building science, building enclosure systems, and construction practices.
  • Familiarity with building codes, materials, and structural or architectural systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively with clients and team members.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and self-motivated with strong organizational skills.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, stand for extended periods, walk on uneven terrain, and perform work at heights.

  • Valid driver's license required if driving for or on behalf of an ECS subsidiary.
