Job description
The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust ("Helmsley") is a global philanthropy driven by a vision of building better futures for people by increasing access to healthcare, advancing new research and ideas, and improving the quality of everyday life. Helmsley strives to make a meaningful impact in its focus areas, matching its significant financial assets with a rigorous and results-oriented approach. Helmsley is committed to close and productive partnerships with its grantees, as well as with other funders and impact players in government, academia, and the private sector who share its interests and goals. Above all, Helmsley endeavors to be forward-thinking in every aspect of its work and will take risks that others cannot or will not take when the risk/reward trade-off warrants.
Since 2008, when Helmsley began its active grantmaking, it has committed more than $4.5 billion. For more information on Helmsley, please visit https://helmsleytrust.org/.
The Type 1 Diabetes Program
Helmsley's Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Program is dedicated to helping the global T1D community live safer, better, and more fulfilling lives today while funding advancements in research and technology for a better tomorrow. To make this vision a reality, our T1D program takes bold but informed risks to support researchers developing new therapies and interventions that can treat, prevent, or delay the disease. We are committed to equitable, affordable access to the tools that can help people with T1D achieve better outcomes. Every day counts for people with T1D and their support network, which is why we build collaborative partnerships to expand the availability of resources to these communities.
To date, the program, which has rapidly become the largest private foundation funder in T1D, has made over 840 grants committing $1.1 billion. We are now increasing our efforts to ensure that proven treatments, management techniques, and therapies are available to all who need them wherever they live in the world.
Position Summary
The T1D Program is seeking an Associate Program Officer (APO) to support a Program Officer managing a Global Access grant portfolio focused on expanding access to insulin and integrated care for people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Reporting to a Program Officer, the APO will provide substantive programmatic support across the grant lifecycle: reviewing and responding to proposals, conducting due diligence, drafting grant recommendations, monitoring grant progress and budgets, synthesizing data and findings into clear materials for internal and external audiences, planning and executing meetings, and maintaining proactive communication with grantees and partners. The role requires some domestic and international travel for grantee meetings and relevant conferences, in line with safety and security policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the grantmaking process: source potential projects, work with applicants to prepare proposals and budgets, and prepare analyses of proposed and active projects for review by Program Officer(s), Program Director, and the Board of Trustees.
- Track grant progress and impact in partnership with grantees and internal departments, ensure timely reporting and payments, and serve as a point of contact for grant-related questions.
- Synthesize qualitative and quantitative data and monitor field trends to inform prospective projects, strategy development, and clear communications materials for internal and external stakeholders.
- Build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers, implementers, civil society organizations, the private sector, ministries of health, and multilateral agencies such as WHO and UN entities, representing Helmsley with humility and partnership.
- Organize, attend, and report on internal and grantee meetings and conferences, and help prepare materials and presentations for senior stakeholders.
- Provide administrative support related to the above, in collaboration with the T1D Program's administrative team.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree in a related field (e.g., Public Health, Public Administration, Public Policy) preferred.
- 2-4 years of professional experience, ideally in global health, the nonprofit sector, research, or grantmaking.
- Experience working in low- and middle-income countries.
- Strong strategic thinking, research, and analytical skills, with a demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Strong project management skills and the judgment to work independently, multi-task, and deliver high-quality work under shifting deadlines and priorities.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare polished materials and articulate a well-reasoned point of view at all levels, inside and outside the foundation.
- Exceptional diplomacy and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across a multicultural, virtual, and cross-sector environment.
- A collaborative, team-oriented approach, paired with the discretion and tact to navigate complex, confidential situations.
- Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
- Experience with Type 1 Diabetes or noncommunicable disease policy is desirable but not required.
