They typically have earned a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and have demonstrated significant experience and achievement in teaching, research, and service. Associate Professors are usually tenured or on the tenure track, and they contribute to curriculum development, mentor students, and participate in academic committees. Their role is essential in maintaining academic standards and advancing the field of English studies.

Associate Professors of English often juggle a combination of teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting original research, and participating in departmental or university service such as committees or student advising. The balance can vary by institution, but most expect Associate Professors to maintain an active research agenda and regularly publish while also fulfilling teaching loads and service commitments. Time management and setting clear priorities are essential to succeed in this multifaceted role, and collaborative work with colleagues—such as team-teaching or co-authoring research—can help manage workload and foster professional growth.
