Job description
The Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks a colleague for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of associate professor or (early) full professor in Educational Studies (ES). We seek a scholar who focuses on Civic Education, Reasoning, and/or Dialogue, and whose research builds on or intersects with the fields of social studies teaching and learning, teacher education, history of education, the learning sciences, philosophy or sociology of education, political science, and/or media literacy.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic community of interdisciplinary scholars committed to advancing equity, justice, and excellence in education through research, teaching, and educator preparation. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work engages critically with civic learning and reasoning, democratic practice and participation with communities, dialogue across difference, or the role of education in fostering informed and engaged citizens.
Competitive applicants will be conducting innovative, community-engaged and/or school-based research related to civic education, reasoning, or dialogue and will be well positioned to secure external funding for their scholarly agenda.
In collaboration with other faculty, teaching will include (a) required and elective courses in the Educational Studies undergraduate minor, MA, and/or PhD programs; (b) required courses in the Educator Preparation Program; (c) supervising dissertations; and (d) fostering the development of graduate students as civic education scholars, researchers, and teacher educators.
This position is part of a faculty cluster focused on democracy policy, data, and civic education, with two other faculty hires in the School of Information and the Ford School of Public Policy.
EDUCATIONAL STUDIES
Educational Studies has an internationally recognized faculty committed to: the study and advancement of equity and social justice in school and in out-of-school settings, effective teaching in the core disciplines, the study of how technologies and other educational innovations enhance teaching and learning, the social and political contexts and the historical and philosophical foundations of schooling, and the use of evidence to shape education policy and public discussions on curriculum, teaching, and achievement. Graduates of our program become engaged in academic and research careers in university programs, research organizations, or public agencies; administrative positions in school systems, educational centers, or national, regional, and state agencies; and in teacher education, professional development and curriculum positions in local and state systems and educational companies as well as for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Candidates will be expected to pursue an active research agenda, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, advise graduate students, direct doctoral dissertations, and serve as an active member of the Educational Studies department, Educator Preparation Program, School of Education, the University, and education professional communities. Experience mentoring students of diverse backgrounds is desired.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
We plan to fill the position with a start date of August 2027. Salary will be negotiated on the basis of the candidate's experience and qualifications. The appointment will be for the regular nine-month academic year with possible additional remuneration for administrative duties. Salaries at the University of Michigan compare favorably with those at other leading institutions of higher education. The University of Michigan offers extensive family-friendly policies for faculty and liberal benefits, including a retirement plan, and group health, dental, and life insurance plans.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will have:
- A doctorate in education with a focus on history/social science or social studies education, teacher education, history of education, learning sciences, philosophy of education, sociology of education, political science, media literacy, or a demonstrable equivalent.
- Experience with and commitment to working in partnership with communities, school leaders, teachers, and/or youth.
- An established, recognized program of research and publication on civic education, reasoning, and/or dialogue, such as studies of schools and schooling, civic identities, community and political participation, preparation of teachers who support civic learning, and educational opportunity across diverse communities.
- A commitment to public scholarship that informs civic education and engagement, particularly in relation to schooling, and to diverse learners and communities.
- Sustained experience with securing grants to support research.
- A record of outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level.
- Experience and expertise in preparing history/social science or social studies teachers to foster civic education in K-12 classrooms.
- A commitment to the mission, vision and values of Marsal Family School of Education.
