Associate Professional Software Engineer information

What is an associate professional software engineer?

An Associate Professional Software Engineer is an entry-level or early-career position in software development, typically held by individuals who have recently graduated or have limited professional experience. They are responsible for assisting in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software applications under the guidance of more senior engineers. This role often involves learning and applying coding standards, collaborating with team members, and gaining experience with software development tools and processes. Over time, Associate Engineers are expected to build their technical skills and take on more complex projects as they progress in their careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate professional software engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Professional Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C#), software development principles, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, development frameworks, and agile methodologies is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help individuals excel in team environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable software, collaborating with others, and adapting to the evolving demands of technology projects.

What opportunities for professional development and mentorship are typically available to associate professional software engineers?

As an Associate Professional Software Engineer, you can expect to participate in structured onboarding programs, receive guidance from senior engineers, and attend regular code reviews. Many organizations offer mentorship programs to help you build technical skills, understand company practices, and navigate your career path. You may also have access to learning platforms, internal workshops, and opportunities to collaborate on cross-functional projects, all of which can accelerate your growth and prepare you for more advanced roles.

What is the difference between Associate Professional Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectAssociate Professional Software EngineerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field; some certificationsBachelor's in CS or related field; coding bootcamps also common
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, team-based projects, corporate or tech firmsVaries from startups to large companies, project-focused
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies, consulting firms, and large enterprisesWidely used across industries, including tech, finance, and healthcare

The main difference is that Associate Professional Software Engineers are typically entry-level with some formal training or certifications, focusing on learning and supporting development tasks. Software Developers may have similar qualifications but often have more experience or a broader scope of responsibilities. Both roles are common in tech environments, but the Associate title emphasizes a starting position in software engineering careers.

Job description

Job Description We are looking for a handsโ€‘on Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and operate scalable cloudโ€‘native backend services and distributed applications. You will work primarily with Java, Spring Boot, AWS, and PostgreSQL, partnering with Product, Architecture, DevOps, Security, and other engineering teams to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions from design through production. In this role, you will have meaningful ownership across the software development lifecycle, contribute to technical design and architecture decisions, and help improve the scalability, reliability, performance, and quality of our platforms. You will also provide technical guidance and mentoring to other engineers while promoting strong engineering practices and endโ€‘toโ€‘end ownership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support scalable backend services, REST APIs, and microservices using Java, Spring Boot, AWS, and PostgreSQL.
  • Build and evolve distributed systems using asynchronous messaging, eventโ€‘driven architecture, serviceโ€‘toโ€‘service communication, caching, resiliency, and faultโ€‘tolerant design patterns.
  • Own technical solutions end to end, including requirements analysis, solution design, implementation, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
  • Design and optimise PostgreSQL databases, including schema design, migrations, indexing, query tuning, data integrity, concurrency, and performance optimisation.
  • Partner with Product, Architecture, DevOps, Security, and other crossโ€‘functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable and maintainable technical solutions.
  • Drive engineering quality through code reviews, automated testing, observability, secure development practices, performance optimisation, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge sharing to engineers while promoting a strong culture of accountability, collaboration, and engineering excellence.
Required Qualifications
  • Professional software engineering experience building and supporting production backend applications.
  • Strong handsโ€‘on experience with Java and Spring Boot.
  • Strong experience developing and deploying applications on AWS Cloud.
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL, including database design, SQL development, indexing, and query optimisation.
  • Experience designing and developing REST APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.
  • Experience owning software throughout the full development lifecycle, including development, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems independently and make practical engineering decisions while balancing scalability, reliability, maintainability, security, and delivery needs.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions, risks, dependencies, and tradeโ€‘offs to both technical and nonโ€‘technical stakeholders.
  • Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, code reviews, or knowledge sharing within an engineering team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Python, including FastAPI or asynchronous service and API development.
  • Experience with distributed messaging and eventโ€‘driven technologies such as AWS SQS, SNS, Apache Kafka, and Redis.
  • Experience with asynchronous processing, publish/subscribe patterns, caching, resiliency, and faultโ€‘tolerant distributed architectures.
  • Experience with containerisation, orchestration, and other cloudโ€‘native application patterns.
  • Experience with CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, GitHub Actions, or Terraform.
  • Experience with observability practices, including application logging, metrics, monitoring, alerting, distributed tracing, and production issue analysis.
  • Experience with performance engineering, including load testing, profiling, capacity planning, scalability testing, and bottleneck analysis.
  • Experience evaluating or using AIโ€‘assisted engineering tools or AI capabilities for relevant software development use cases.
