Job description

Responsibilities
The Environmental Principal serves as the highest level of technical leadership within the Environmental practice and is responsible for ensuring overall quality, performance, risk management, and strategic direction across environmental services. This role provides final technical authority, oversees execution across projects and service lines, drives business development, and serves as a trusted advisor to clients and ECS leadership. The Environmental Principal operates as a subject matter expert, mentor, and organizational leader while maintaining a positive customer service attitude and demonstrating ECS Core Values.
Responsibilities
  • Provides final technical authority for assessment and remediation projects
  • Oversees project strategy, investigation approaches, remediation design, and regulatory compliance
  • Reviews complex technical reports, corrective action plans, and remediation recommendations
  • Advises project teams on regulatory requirements, remediation technologies, and risk management strategies
  • Evaluates project risks, scope changes, schedule impacts, and financial exposure
  • Reviews site work plans, sampling programs, health and safety requirements, and subcontractor strategies
  • Provides senior technical leadership on complex environmental investigations and remediation programs
  • Reviews underground storage tank assessment and remediation system implementation activities
  • Provides enterprise-level technical expertise and oversight across the Environmental practice
  • Performs final technical review and approval of reports, recommendations, and deliverables
  • Ensures technical quality, consistency, and compliance with ECS quality standards across projects and service lines
  • Oversees project performance and supports resolution of complex technical, operational, regulatory, and client issues
  • Mentors Associate Principals, Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and technical staff
  • Leads business development efforts and expands strategic client relationships
  • Reviews and approves major proposals, contracts, and project decisions in accordance with Signature Authority policies
  • Supports department and office financial performance through oversight of project profitability, collections, and utilization
  • Assists with staffing decisions, succession planning, and workforce development
  • Represents ECS as a recognized technical expert within the industry and community
  • Participates in leadership activities, review committees, and strategic initiatives
  • Provides cross-functional support across departments, offices, and service lines

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • 12 years of related experience with a professional engineering or geology license per ECS Senior Technical Staff Policies and Procedures
    • Or 16 years of related experience with certifications per ECS Senior Technical Staff Policies and Procedures
  • Bachelor's and/or Master's of Science in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Natural or Environmental Science, Geology, or other degree relevant to the practice of Environmental Consulting
  • Per the ECS Senior Technical Staff Policies and Procedures, maintain license and/or certifications as necessary for the work performed or managed
  • If driving for or on behalf of any ECS subsidiary, a valid driver's license is required
  • Established reputation as a technical expert within Environmental Consulting
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting, compliance, and technical practices
  • Strong regional or multi-regional client relationships
  • Proven success in business development and revenue growth
  • Advanced technical expertise across environmental service lines
  • Proven leadership and decision-making capability at an organizational level
  • Extensive experience in project management, risk management, and consulting
  • Ability to perform and sign final technical reviews of reports, plans, and deliverables
  • Ability to mentor Associate Principals, Project Managers, and future leaders
  • Strong financial and operational awareness
