Job description

Job Title: Senior Associate, Mechanical Engineer

Job Code: 41123

Job Location: Tempe, AZ

Job Schedule: 1st shift- 9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days - totaling 80 hours worked - and have every other Friday off

Job Description:

Performs a variety of engineering work in the development, improvement, and testing utilized in the manufacture of image intensifier tubes (night vision). Must be prepared to learn extensively regarding the manufacture and testing of image intensifier tubes. The work will include the optimization of current processes targeting increased manufacturing yield and lower labor costs.  Emphasis will be in improving efficiency and quality by implementing manufacturing best practices, including improved technology and automation. Must be able to start and lead projects to their conclusion. Success in this role will be measured by the cost savings associated with improved processes and higher yields, and enhanced product performance.  The candidate will also apply engineering principles and troubleshooting skills to provide day-to-day technical support to active production lines.

Essential Functions:

  • Detailed Mechanical Design of tooling and fixturing for manufacturing automation
  • Reviews and identifies improvements for improved ergonomics, increased efficiency, and FOD reduction in existing process tooling and fixtures
  • Generates design documentation and technical data package (engineering drawings, specifications, etc.)
  • Prepares materials for internal design reviews
  • Presents projects and performance to management teams
  • Works with a cross functional team of Engineers and operators to identify and implement improvements
  • Assure product and process quality by monitoring finished product and process capabilities; establishing standards; and validating manufacturing processes
  • Maintains product and company reputation by complying with government regulations
  • Interfaces with customers and suppliers as needed
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks.
  • Production support includes but is not limited to test fixture and tooling designs, product trouble shooting, document and drawing updates, process control improvements, development of custom customer solutions, and product design improvements
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that is cooperative and supportive of customers, co-workers and managers
  • Security clearance required / ability to attain security clearance during employment
  • Ability to effectively establish rapport and develop effective relationships
  • Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, NX etc
  • Understanding of GD&T application and interpretation
  • Proficient in generating and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Understanding of physics, engineering mechanics, fatigue, and mechanics of materials
  • Understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer as well as dynamics and vibration
  • Understanding of manufacturing methods and lean principles
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance within 1 year of start date

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. Graduate Degree or equivalent with 0 to 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 6 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience with Design for Automation in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with SolidWorks 
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis tools and methods
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills
  • Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma Green Belt certification a plus
