The Associate Packaging Engineer will join a dynamic R&D team responsible for the development, testing, qualification and commercialization of packaging systems for the industry leader in consumer lawn and garden products. A specific focus will be on Lawns Products and their supporting products. The Associate Packaging Engineering will be called upon to lead projects that create new business opportunities or improve existing offerings across all business units and retail channels, including the growing eCommerce segments.
The Associate Packaging Engineer will leverage a broad range of packaging materials and manufacturing processes such as: flexible films, blow-molded / thermoform containers and trays, injection molded parts, corrugated shipping containers, and in-store displays to develop packaging solutions that delight our consumers. The development process will include concept creation, prototyping, defining technical performance criteria, establishing test methods, analyzing data, and creating product specifications. Final execution milestones will be BOM creation and store execution / POP.
The Associate Packaging Engineer will be responsible for executing projects of varying complexity ranging from basic material changes to complex packaging systems and equipment platforms. Project management responsibilities include defining the scope of work, identifying resources required, developing project plans, establishing timelines, and managing internal and external resources. The Associate Packaging Engineer will successfully collaborate with the Lawns Team, packaging suppliers, R&D, Marketing, Sales, and Supply Chain to ensure business alignment during development and drive technical excellence throughout the product launch.
What you'll do in this role:
  • Works in multifunctional teams with Marketing, Supply Chain, R&D, and suppliers to commercialize new and improve existing packaging.
  • Prepares project timelines and tracks progress from concept through implementation.
  • Develops and refines concepts for new products, packaging, and processes.
  • Develops budgetary quotes/cost estimates for new packaging programs.
  • Creates package test plans protocols, monitors testing, and interprets data to ensure package integrity throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Monitors and approves work of suppliers and/or contractors that are designing, developing, and prototyping packaging.
  • Provides assistance to internal and external Operations during the startup of new products or packages.
  • Identifies novel packaging and applicator concepts to satisfy unmet customer/consumer needs. Performs feasibility testing to determine commercialization potential.
  • Develops and refines new concepts into business proposals with detailed plans to commercialize.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements to boost team efficiency.

Requirements:
Education:
B.S. Degree in a technical field - Packaging Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering.
Experience:
0-2 years of full-time experience developing primary and secondary packaging solutions. Consumer-packaged goods industry is preferred. Training and mentoring will be provided. Co-op/internships experiences are preferred.
Knowledge:
Technical knowledge obtained from the successful completion of an undergraduate degree. Knowledge of fundamental engineering principles and ability to apply them to the evaluation and optimization of packaging solutions.
Working knowledge of commercially available paper, rigid, and flexible plastic packaging systems.
The starting budgeted pay range for this role will generally fall between $67,800.00 - $79,800.00 per year. Scotts will consider various factors in determining the actual pay including your skills, qualifications, experience, and geographical location.For remote roles where the final candidate resides in Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon or Washington, state required pay thresholds will be factored into base salary.
