Position Summary
Provides day-to-day direction of Sand & Gravel operations by planning, organizing and supervising people, projects and materials. Assures and abides by Company Safety Program and Policies, as well as standards related to Sand and Gravel operations, while performing duties safely. Consistent and reliable attendance is required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Interprets and applies MSHA, Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.

Reviews project proposal needs and plans to determine time frame, procedures for accomplishing project, staffing and equipment requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of the project.

Monitors facilities and equipment for MSHA regulatory compliance. Work with MSHA inspectors during inspections and audits. Manage MSHA safety plan, records, and submittals. Understand and become familiar with MSHA regulations.

Works with the Sand & Gravel Senior Manager to obtain the personnel and equipment resources required to properly staff the project.

 

Selects, trains, motivates and evaluates personnel; provides or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline and termination procedures as necessary; promotes high morale.

 

Monitors and reports project cost and schedule performance; recommends corrective actions if needed.

Ensures equipment has been monitored prior to work instructions, and according to performance criteria, QC checks and contains the correct documentation.

Assists with developing safety policies and safety plans. Coordinates development of policies and plans with supervisors and manager. Oversees execution of program policies. Assist in incident reporting and accident investigation.

Accommodates plant requests based on production schedules to assure appropriate sequence of operations.

Assures workshop operations are maintained to ensure equipment and machinery are assembled and tested according to department standards.

Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance, and operational reports to determine causes of nonconformity with product specification and operating or production problems.

Manages Stormwater and Spill Prevention Plans while conducting inspections and taking samples for testing.

Coordinates Mining and Reclamation plans for each pit location.

Coordinates, reviews and maintains service requests, stock/inventory orders, emergency orders and warranties for Beatrice S&G plants. Secure and maintain inventory control over shop supplies, equipment, tools, vehicles, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required items when needed.

Other duties may be assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

Directly supervises Beatrice Sand and Gravel non-exempt technical employees. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. General Manager approval required.

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Associates degree from college or technical school; and
  • one year previous management experience; or
  • equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • MSHA Miner certification or ability to obtain and maintain within reasonable time after hire.

Other Qualifications:

  • Background in mining or heavy construction is helpful.
  • Previous management experience preferred with emphasis in managing labor pools, scheduling production, maintaining quality control standards, maintaining raw materials.
  • Mechanical aptitude required. Preference is given to incumbents with previous electrical and mechanical experience. 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to operate multiple pieces of heavy machinery such as a loader, skid loader, motor grader, and crane is necessary. 
  • Knowledge of or become knowledgeable regarding gradation: sampling, testing, calculating, reporting, and adjusting.           
  • General math skills required for production and inventory reporting.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Basic computer skills required to manage production and performance within the reporting systems of the company.
  • Knowledge of sand and gravel materials, methods, and the equipment/tools involved in the performance of the departments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cost control, cost reporting and project schedule management.
  • Previousleadership skills and team building/training experience are especially important.
  • Must be able to physically lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Must also have the ability to deal with a variety of situations related to managing and motivating employees.
