Job description

The Nuclear Simulator Engineer (or Simulator Design Engineer III) will apply industry best practices, regulatory guidance, codes and standards, and engineering expertise to support control strategy development and simulator-assisted design activities. The engineer will be part of a dynamic team executing a U.S. Government cost-shared development program, requiring efficient completion of engineering assignments. The Simulator Engineer III will support the development, maintenance, and enhancement of nuclear power plant simulators. The ideal candidate will have experience in real-time simulation, thermo-hydraulic modeling, and control system integration. This role involves working with advanced simulation tools, integrating system models, and ensuring simulator fidelity for operator training and engineering applications.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Simulator Development & Maintenance:
    • Design, develop, and maintain high-fidelity nuclear plant simulators, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
    • Implement control logic, thermal-hydraulic models, and system responses for real-time simulation.
    • Integrate RELAP5, S3R, and 3KeyMaster into simulation environments.
    • Ensure simulator configuration control and model validation.
  • System Modeling & Integration:
    • Develop and update thermo-hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical system models to improve simulator accuracy.
    • Interface simulators with digital control platforms and plant control systems.
    • Support the integration of I/O systems for seamless data communication.
  • Testing, Validation & Troubleshooting:
    • Conduct verification and validation (V&V) testing to ensure simulation accuracy and compliance.
    • Diagnose and resolve software, model, and control logic discrepancies.
    • Perform regression testing to verify simulator performance after updates.
  • Collaboration & Technical Support:
    • Work with cross-functional teams, including engineers, and training personnel.
    • Support operator training programs by ensuring simulator responsiveness and reliability.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Nuclear Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with nuclear power plant systems and process modeling.
  • Strong proficiency in simulator tools, such as 3KeyMaster, RELAP5, MELCOR, or equivalent.
  • Understanding of plant control logic, I&C systems, and human-system interface (HSI) concepts.
  • Eligible to work in accord with Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with nuclear power plant systems and process modeling.
  • Experience in CFD modeling and multi-physics simulation.
  • Ability to analyze plant operation data and translate it into simulation models.
  • Knowledge of digital twin technology and real-time data integration.
  • Familiarity with NRC regulations and ANS-3.5 standards for simulator certification.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
