Job description

The Financial Accountant III position exists to provide advanced support to assigned ministries in one or more of the following areas:  general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial analysis, and reporting.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develops in-depth understanding of assigned Impact Centers’ ministry objectives
  • Interfaces with client project managers and facilitators to ensure accurate and timely accounting of ministry activities
  • Contributes significantly to planning annual budgets and monitors execution of ongoing financial plans
  • Ensures timely and accurate processing of incoming sales invoices and corresponding payments
  • Interacts with vendors, Ministry Procurement Services, and other staff to provide invoice/payment resolution
  • Ensures outgoing invoices and posting of corresponding payments received are processed in a timely manner
  • Maintains customer and supplier accounts and posts transactions to the general ledger
  • Prepares and enters accruals and journal entries to the general ledger in compliance with GAAP, ministry policies, and procedures
  • Performs financial analysis, reconciliations, and journal entries in support of monthly and annual close processes
  • Prepares detailed financial reports and provides other information to clients, staff, and executive leadership as needed
  • Develops, maintains, and troubleshoots complex spreadsheets and databases to facilitate monitoring and reporting of financial activities
  • Engages other work groups to solve problems, maintain regulatory compliance, and maximize ministry stewardship
  • Assists in developing and implementing effective internal controls within areas of responsibility
  • Oversees record-keeping in compliance with GAAP and ministry policies
  • Participates in cross functional team assignments as required
  • Prepares information for internal and external audits

Specific to Charitable Solicitations and Gift Annuities: 

  • Ensures timely review and filing of state charitable solicitation and charitable gift annuity filings

Specific to Royalties:

  • Administers Domestic, International, and Associate Office licensing agreements, including the allocation of related Royalty Income
  • Audits Author & Mechanical contracts and makes appropriate revisions to the royalty system
  • Reviews Product and Music contracts, ensuring that they are accurately set up in the royalty system, and that all royalty calculations are accurate
  • Performs Royalty-related month-end close requirements, including reconciliation and journal entries

Specific to Tax:

  • Ensures accurate and timely preparation and filing of monthly, quarterly, and special event sales and use tax returns
  • Contributes toward completion of numerous state and federal tax documents and forms, including IRS Forms 990 and 5500, W-9, tax exempt certificates, estimated tax vouchers, ECFA filings, and tax and business license requests
  • Analyzes and reports unrelated business income; reconciles sales tax accounts in the general ledger
  • Performs or reviews research into tax and business topics as assigned and reports findings to management
  • Reviews ministry publications, broadcasts, and other communications related to lobbying activity to ensure compliance with Internal Revenue Code
  • Analyzes monthly rental income invoices for inclusion in exempt property tax filing
  • Assists in monthly use tax calculation for inclusion into upload to Avalara AvaTax
  • Assists in maintaining customer sales tax exemptions in Avalara CertCapture and renewal campaigns
  • Analyzes Sales tax errors and reconciliations on an as needed basis

Specific to Fixed Asset Management:

  • Posts, reconciles, and maintains Fixed Asset ledger
  • Participates in the coordination and development of capital budgets
  • Reviews and tracks Capital Appropriation Requests
  • Calculates and maintains depreciation schedules

Specific to Inventory Accounting:

  • Is responsible for the accurate weighted average costs, item numbers, automated accounting instructions and document types utilized in the inventory module of the accounting enterprise system
  • Is responsible for accurate accounting of inventory, Cost of Goods Distributed, product assembly, obsolescence/excess valuations, and disposals
  • Provides meaningful and accurate analysis and reporting to management

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the training and development of staff at various levels
  • Assists in various insurance renewals
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Managerial Breadth/Scope of Job:

  • May oversee the work of lower-level staff accountants

Personal Characteristics:

  • Strong integrity and character-based leadership needed to provide accountability on financial stewardship, reporting, and management issues Must be a servant leader who maximizes strengths and maintains accountability in areas of needed development

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or in Business with emphasis in Accounting preferred
  • 2-4 years of experience in Accounting or Financial Analysis (or equivalent work experience)
  • Previous experience in coordinating tax matters preferred (Tax & Lobbying position)
  • Previous experience in coordinating insurance matters preferred (Risk & Insurance position)
  • 2 years of experience with Royalty contracts and computation of related Royalty income, advances, and expenses preferred (Royalty position)

Skills, Abilities, and Special Talents/Gifts:

  • Able to communicate effectively, verbally and written
  • Ability to deal with stress from deadline pressure and multiple tasks
  • Shows discretion in handling confidential information
  • Proficient in use of MS Office software, especially Excel advanced functions (lookups, pivot tables, macros, etc.); Great Plains experience helpful

  • Analytical skills to extract data and draw conclusions
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule workload; work independently
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong technical aptitude required to learn, operate, and troubleshoot specific software and related systems

Stewardship Requirements:

  • Implements cost reduction and efficiency improvements where appropriate

Pay Range: $26.85 to $31.81/hr
