Part-Time Professional Tutor - Science Academic Success Center who will be all-in on our mission and who provides high-quality academic support to students through individual and small-group tutoring in science disciplines. Tutoring services are designed to assist students proactively or remedially by reinforcing course concepts, strengthening study skills, and promoting academic confidence and success.
The mission of the Academic Success Centers (ASC) is to provide the AC student with academic support and learning strategies through services, resources and collaborations with faculty that allow students to become engaged, independent and successful learners.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Required: Associate Degree with a minimum of twelve (12) semester credit hours in science.
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related science field.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Successful completion of college-level science courses (including Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and/or Microbiology) with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Preferred: Previous tutoring or teaching experience in a high school, college, or similar educational setting.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide individual and small-group tutoring in science courses, including Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and other science subjects as assigned.
- Utilize learner-centered tutoring strategies that reinforce course concepts, improve critical thinking, and promote student independence and academic success.
- Encourage, motivate, and build student confidence through positive reinforcement, effective communication, and individualized academic support.
- Provide and reinforce effective learning strategies, including study skills, note-taking, time management, problem-solving, and test-taking techniques.
- Assess students' learning needs and adapt tutoring approaches to accommodate diverse learning styles and academic abilities.
- Develop, maintain, and utilize tutoring materials, study guides, practice activities, and other instructional resources that support student learning.
- Collaborate with faculty to reinforce course objectives, identify student learning needs, and communicate student progress or concerns as appropriate.
- Assist students in identifying and utilizing available Academic Success Center resources and campus support services.
- Support the daily operations of the Science Academic Success Center by maintaining a welcoming, organized, and productive learning environment.
- Participate in tutor training, professional development, staff meetings, and Academic Success Center initiatives.
- Promote academic integrity, professionalism, and adherence to the Science Academic Success Center Tutor Code of Conduct.
- Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and student participation in accordance with departmental procedures while ensuring the confidentiality of student information and compliance with FERPA regulations.
- Foster an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages student engagement, persistence, and achievement.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to effectively tutor and communicate scientific concepts to students with diverse learning styles.
- Knowledge of college-level science coursework, including Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and/or Microbiology.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to motivate, encourage, and support student learning through learner-centered instructional techniques.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Tutor Confidentiality Agreement and applicable student privacy requirements.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff while maintaining professionalism.

Salary: Amarillo College follows a lag pay strategy, with starting offers typically between the minimum and midpoint of the pay grade, rarely reaching the maximum to support long-term growth within each position.
Pay grade 10 (salary is determined by Human Resources based on education, work experience and internal comparisons).
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to travel between offices and campus locations and occasionally lift, carry, push, or move materials and office supplies up to twenty-five (25) pounds as needed.
Working Conditions: This is a part-time position scheduled for a maximum of nineteen (19) hours per week.
Work Environment: This position operates primarily in an academic tutoring and professional office environment. The position routinely uses computers, telephones, printers, copiers, and other standard office equipment while working closely with students, faculty, and staff.
