Job description

Job Responsibilities The IGNITE Peer Tutor supports students enrolled in engineering and advanced programs at Midlands Technical College. Peer Tutors play a vital role in helping students master course content, strengthen technical skills, and succeed in academic and training programs. This position is designed for knowledgeable, high-performing students who demonstrate strong communication skills, a commitment to helping others, and proficiency in one or more of the engineering or industrial technology pathways supported by IGNITE.

Tutors will assist students through one-on-one sessions, small-group support, scheduled lab hours, and structured academic coaching. Supported Program Areas: Peer Tutors will support coursework aligned with IGNITE-funded Advanced Manufacturing pathways, which include: Engineering Technology Academic Pathways Associate in General Engineering Technology, including concentrations in: Electric Vehicle Engineering Technology Civil Engineering Technology Mechanical Engineering Technology Electrical Engineering Technology Associate in Mechatronics General Engineering Technology Certificate Electric Vehicle Engineering Technology Certificate Industrial & Technical Training Programs: Industrial Mechanical Maintenance Technician Industrial Electrical Maintenance Technician Production Technician Tutors may specialize in a specific pathway or course sequence depending on skillset and academic background. Key Responsibilities: Provide tutoring in assigned engineering or industrial technology course areas, reinforcing concepts taught in class.

Assist students in developing strong technical foundations in areas such as: Mechanical systems Electrical systems Robotics and automation Mechatronics Engineering principles EV systems fundamentals Support students in applying theoretical concepts to hands-on work Help students improve study habits, note-taking skills, and exam preparation strategies Maintain accurate tutoring logs and student progress notes as required by IGNITE reporting standards Collaborate with IGNITE staff to ensure tutoring aligns with program goals Refer students to additional campus resources when appropriate Attend tutor training sessions, check-in meetings, and professional development workshops Model professionalism, a strong work ethic, and a supportive learning environment This position is located on the Midlands Technical College Airport and Northeast Campus. Minimum and Additional Requirements Must be currently enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year college institution and be pursuing a degree in Engineering disciplines or Mechatronics Successful completion (grade A) of the course(s) you wish to tutor, or faculty recommendation Strong understanding of engineering and/or technical coursework Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently and manage time effectively Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and student success Preferred Qualifications Experience helping peers or mentoring in an academic or technical environment Familiarity with hands-on lab environments and safety procedures
