General Summary:

Unum Group seeks Senior Software Engineers in Chattanooga, TN.

  • Lead the conceptualization, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of new and existing features for the existing portfolio of applications for a business area
  • Provide technical leadership and direction for epics and features delivered
  • Ensure application solution design conforms to agreed upon quality attributes such as performance, fault tolerance, etc.
  • Design, code, configure, unit test, maintain, and document software deliverables using agreed upon standards and tools.
  • Collaborate with Principal SE and architects on coding standards, processes, tooling and frameworks required for the delivery of features in the sprint or product backlog
  • May complete the design of components of an application that supports and advances the reference architecture.
  • Ensure that solutions delivered by self or team members are secure and scalable, comply with defined standards and best practices.
  • Actively look for solutions that are buy over build and are cloud based.
  • Ensure product backlog has appropriate technical stories and participates in their prioritization.
  • Provide ongoing and appropriate mentorship for Software Engineers and Associate Software Engineers.
  • Responsible for application solution quality from design and implementation to deploy and run. Participate in definition and maintenance of software standards.
  • Responsible for communication and collaboration with key stakeholders in the delivery of features.
  • Maintain depth of technical understanding of third party/cloud solutions and Unum's implementation of solutions.
  • Evaluate technical impacts from and coordinates implementation of new product releases.
  • Participate in sizing and estimation activities within the agile team.
  • Communicate daily with the Scrum Master or Technical Product Owner and the Agile team on progress made and planned progress for the coming day and report any impediments that are blocking their progress.
  • Participate in code reviews and sprint retrospectives; ensuring their ideas for team continuous improvement are communicated so that the overall process and team can improve sprint by sprint and readily receive feedback for self-improvement.
  • Focus on delivering business priority and value at all times.
  • Responsible for ensuring the quality of existing and new features through both manual and automated testing and use of continuous Integration techniques.
  • Demonstrate an interest in software architectures and seeks to design solutions in alignment with Company stated architecture and standards.
  • Participate in Proof of Concept work and prototyping when necessary.
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts to confirm understanding of business requirements relating to features to be delivered and to help the Business Analyst define requirements that can be delivered from a technical perspective.
  • Collaborate with User Experience (UX) designers to ensure designs produced can be translated efficiently into working solutions for feature delivery.
  • Collaborate with Test Engineers and Senior Test Engineers.

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related field plus 5 years of related experience. Requires 5 years of experience with the following: Software Development & Deployment Expertise: Developing with the Navilink C# code base, SQL Server backend, and batch server operations including deployment coordination and coding standards; Agile Methodology & Team Collaboration: Working in a Scaled Agile environment, actively participating in team syncs, backlog refinement, iteration planning, retrospectives, and program increment planning; Source Control & Release Management: Experience with source control systems, including branch/merge strategies and release management best practices; System Integration & Data Transfer Knowledge: Strong understanding of system integrations, APIs, file transfers (flat files, XML, JSON), message queues, and API gateways; Industry-Specific IT Support: IT support experience within insurance or healthcare industries, with familiarity in handling PII and PHI data privacy requirements; Change Management & Multi-Team Coordination: Experience managing software supported by multiple concurrent teams and implementing change management processes; Tool Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, SharePoint, OneDrive) and agile management tools, Rally, JIRA, or Microsoft Project; Multi- Tiered Environment Experience: Hands-on experience managing software in a multi-tiered, client-server architecture; Technical Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis: Proven ability to triage issues, perform root cause analysis, and manage incidents and problems effectively; Detail-Oriented Problem Solver: Strong critical thinking skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or collaboratively with mixed teams of full-time and contingent workers.

40 hours/week; $130,936 - $140,936 per year. This wage range supersedes the base salary range listed below, due to the salary range below reflecting a national range.
