What is an associate fund accountant?

Associate Fund Accountants are entry-level professionals who assist in managing and recording the financial activities of investment funds, such as mutual funds, hedge funds, or private equity funds. Their responsibilities typically include preparing financial statements, calculating the net asset value (NAV) of funds, reconciling accounts, and ensuring regulatory compliance. They work closely with senior accountants and fund managers to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. This role is ideal for individuals with a background in accounting or finance who are interested in the investment management industry.

What are some typical challenges an associate fund accountant might face during month-end close processes?

Associate Fund Accountants often encounter tight deadlines and high volumes of transactions during the month-end close process. Ensuring the accuracy of NAV calculations, reconciling discrepancies, and coordinating with custodians and fund managers can be challenging, especially when handling multiple funds. Effective time management and strong attention to detail are crucial for meeting reporting requirements and maintaining compliance. Collaborating closely with senior accountants and other departments helps in resolving issues efficiently and streamlining the workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate fund accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Fund Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with fund accounting software such as Investran or Geneva, and proficiency in Excel are commonly required, with some roles preferring candidates with CPA or CFA progress. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you excel in managing deadlines and collaborating with clients or internal teams. These competencies ensure accurate fund records, compliance with regulations, and efficient financial operations in the investment management industry.

Fund Accounting Manager

Dallas, TX | Hybrid

A specialist financial services organisation is seeking a Fund Accounting Manager to lead the delivery of accounting and reporting services for a portfolio of private equity funds.

This is a hands-on leadership opportunity combining technical fund accounting, team management and direct client responsibility. You will oversee the work of Fund Accountants and Senior Fund Accountants, ensuring accurate and timely delivery while acting as a key point of contact for clients.

The position would suit an experienced private equity fund accountant ready to take greater ownership of people, client relationships and complex fund structures.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of Fund Accountants and Senior Fund Accountants
  • Oversee periodic NAV calculations, general ledgers and trial balances for private equity funds
  • Review financial statements, investor reporting and partner allocations
  • Review capital calls, distributions and other fund-level transactions
  • Oversee the calculation of management fees, fund expenses and carried interest
  • Review accounting work and client deliverables for accuracy and completeness
  • Act as a primary contact for clients, resolving accounting and reporting queries
  • Coordinate external audits from initial planning through to completion
  • Interpret partnership agreements, private placement memoranda and other fund documentation
  • Support the onboarding and conversion of new funds and client relationships
  • Conduct performance reviews and identify training and development needs across the team
  • Work with internal specialists across investor services, tax and financial reporting

What we’re looking for

  • Approximately five or more years of relevant accounting experience, including strong exposure to private equity fund accounting
  • Previous experience reviewing the work of others and leading, supervising or developing accounting professionals
  • Strong understanding of private equity fund structures and accounting processes
  • Experience preparing or reviewing general ledgers, NAVs and financial statements
  • Knowledge of US GAAP and other relevant accounting frameworks
  • Confidence managing client relationships and communicating with senior stakeholders
  • Experience interpreting partnership agreements and applying them to fund accounting
  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related subject, or a relevant professional qualification
  • Experience with a recognised private equity fund-accounting platform would be advantageous

Why consider this opportunity?

  • Lead a team while retaining exposure to technically complex fund structures
  • Gain direct ownership of institutional client relationships
  • Broaden your experience across reporting, audits, onboarding and operational improvement
  • Join an established environment offering scope for continued professional development and career progression
