Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Patient Financial Services Team Lead, Assistant Director of Patient Financial Services, and/or AVP of Revenue Cycle, the Patient Financial Services (PFS) Associate - Self Pay Collections is responsible for the accurate and timely management of assigned selfpay and patientresponsible accounts to ensure appropriate resolution, compliance, and cash recovery.

JOB DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The PFS Associate reviews and works assigned patient accounts, including highdollar and complex balances, to facilitate timely payment through billing, followup, financial assistance screening, and collection workflows. Maintains complete and accurate documentation of all account activity, patient interactions, financial determinations, and collection actions within the patient accounting systems to support transparency, audit readiness, and continuity of account management. 

In addition, the PFS Associate ensures a high level of customer satisfaction and compassionate financial communication by responding to patient inquiries, complaints, and requests for information in a timely, accurate, and professional manner. This includes explaining balances, billing outcomes, financial assistance options, and collection processes while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with hospital standards. 

The PFS Associate identifies and escalates complex account issues, collection challenges, recurring trends, and workflow barriers, and communicates findings and recommendations to leadership. The position plays a critical role in supporting the organization's ICARE values, commitment to financial stewardship, patientcentered service, and effective revenue cycle outcomes.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years' prior healthcare billing experience and knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of Word and Excel applications.
  • Must be able to adapt to system changes, manage heavy call volume, be a self-starter, organized, detail oriented.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College degree and or certifications in billing and coding.
  • Bilingual, English and Spanish. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Lift stored document boxes up to 10 lbs.

As part of employment at Southhampton Hospital, there may be occasions when travel to other locations is needed to support operational needs.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience.

  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
