They typically work under the supervision of senior engineers, supporting project implementation, performing routine inspections, and ensuring equipment operates efficiently. This role often requires travel, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and team members. Associate Field Engineers may also be responsible for documenting service activities and providing technical support to customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate field engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Field Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering fundamentals, problem-solving, and a relevant bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-specific tools like CAD software, diagnostic equipment, and safety certifications such as OSHA are typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills are vital for collaborating with clients and cross-functional teams in variable field environments. These skills and qualifications ensure efficient project execution, technical accuracy, and effective client service in dynamic field settings.

Job description

Job Title: Field Service Technician (Construction Technology & Infrastructure)
Role Overview
We are seeking an adaptable, hands-on, and technically proficient Field Service Technician to provide on-site technology installation, infrastructure setup, and technical support for active construction job sites. In this role, you will be responsible for deploying the critical digital infrastructure that keeps our field operations running-ranging from computer hardware and structured cabling to high-performance wireless networks, cellular boosters, and satellite internet solutions.
This is a dynamic, travel-intensive field role for a professional who thrives outside of a traditional office environment. You will serve as the primary on-site technical expert, diagnosing network disruptions, managing hardware assets, and coordinating with vendors to ensure seamless project connectivity. If you possess a strong background in IT networking and field engineering and are excited by the challenge of supporting complex construction environments, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Installation & Deployment
โ€ข Hardware & Workstation Setup: Configure, install, and deploy computer workstations, servers, printers, and conference room/training center presentation systems.
โ€ข Network & Connectivity Setup: Install enterprise networking equipment-including routers, switches, and wireless access points-to establish reliable jobsite LAN/WAN environments.
โ€ข Cellular & Internet Solutions: Implement robust mobile and remote connectivity solutions, including cellular modems, mobile hotspots, high-gain antenna systems, and satellite internet hardware (e.g., Starlink).
โ€ข Cabling & Physical Security: Terminate and test copper and fiber-optic cables; support the physical setup of specialized jobsite hardware such as security cameras and access control systems.
โ€ข Asset Management: Oversee the distribution, tracking, and recovery of mobile technology assets, validating full functionality prior to project sign-off.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
โ€ข Field Diagnostics: Provide rapid, independent troubleshooting for hardware, software, and network connectivity issues (Wi-Fi, cellular, and Ethernet) across active job sites.
โ€ข Maintenance & Updates: Execute routine software updates, system patches, hardware replacements, and remote support tasks to minimize operational downtime.
โ€ข Escalation & Safety: Exercise strong critical thinking to evaluate technical issues, resolve them independently, or appropriately escalate complex blocks; strictly adhere to all on-site safety guidelines and electrical protocols.
Documentation & Vendor Coordination
โ€ข Operational Reporting: Maintain detailed logs of installations, configurations, and open service tickets; provide regular status reports to management.
โ€ข Vendor Collaboration: Coordinate with third-party telecommunications providers, technology vendors, and utility contractors for equipment delivery, repairs, and service activations.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
โ€ข Education: High School Diploma or GED required (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field is a strong plus).
โ€ข Experience Baseline: Minimum of 3+ years of professional experience in IT support, network installation, field service, or infrastructure deployment (construction tech experience preferred).
โ€ข Technical Mastery:
oProven experience installing and troubleshooting wired and wireless network infrastructure.
oStrong working knowledge of alternative internet solutions (cellular hotspots, satellite modems, routers, and external antennas).
oFamiliarity with hardware deployment (workstations, printers, peripherals, and security devices).
โ€ข Physical & Travel Requirements:
oAbility to travel nationwide and regionally on a frequent basis, including overnight stays and short periods away from home.
oCapability to perform physical work in varying construction environments (indoors and outdoors, in different weather conditions, and at heights).
oAbility to lift and carry heavy equipment (up to 30 lbs.).
oValid driver's license, reliable transportation, and a clean driving record for the past 5 years.
โ€ข Core Competencies: Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail; strong independent problem-solving skills; excellent communication abilities for interacting with diverse jobsite crews and management.
Preferred Attributes
โ€ข Hands-on experience working with enterprise hardware (e.g., Cisco routing/switching equipment).
โ€ข Professional certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA).
โ€ข Prior background supporting technology environments within the construction, engineering, or heavy industrial sectors.
โ€ข Experience managing remote technology deployments across multiple, geographically dispersed sites.
