Outreach Clerk

Job Description 

The Outreach Clerk is responsible for supporting outreach services and programs under the general direction of the Community Engagement Librarian. Major responsibilities include assisting in developing programs and services and supporting programming, particularly in relation to outreach services.

  • Library Director 
  • Community Engagement Librarian 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Carries out visits to community events, community organizations, businesses, and senior centers. This includes preparing and compiling appropriate materials beforehand, and conducting programming as requested. 
  • With the guidance of the Community Engagement Librarian, develop partnerships with the community. 
  • Promotes reading and literacy to children, family, and underserved populations at outreach events. Maintain and cultivate contact with the general community. 
  • Assists customers in accessing community services. 
  • Assists customers in using the online catalog and other electronic tools and resources; assists and instructs customers in using library services, equipment, and facilities. 
  • Assists customers in applying for a library card; utilizes computer hardware and software to enter and retrieve customer information. 
  • Assists customers with holds, circulation and accessing TPLD services and resources. 
  • Anticipates customer needs and delivers timely, accurate information/solutions. Listens and actively promotes cooperation and trust to meet customer needs. 
  • Attends meetings and workshops, when directed, related to programming and outreach. 
  • Assists in setting up outreach events 
  • Process donated materials for inclusion in outreach giveaways or book fundraisers.  
  • On occasion, may need to fill in as circulation clerk, and perform duties such as check-in/check-out procedures, answering the telephone, placing holds as requested by patrons, preparing library cards for patrons, and shelving materials. 

Minimum Requirements 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent 
  • Highly organized with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift book bags, push loaded book carts 
  • Excellent customer services skills 
  • Solid working knowledge of MS Office 
  • Valid Driver's license 
  • Ability to work a varied schedule inclusive of evenings and weekends 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 

Preferred 

  • Public Library Experience 
  • One-two years of customer service experience 
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in related field
