Associate Electrical Engineer information

What does an associate electrical engineer do?

An Associate Electrical Engineer assists in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components, often working under the supervision of senior engineers. Their responsibilities may include creating technical drawings, performing calculations, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring projects meet safety standards and regulations. They often work on projects related to power generation, electronics, telecommunications, or building electrical systems. This entry-level role is ideal for recent graduates or those with limited experience, providing a foundation for career advancement in electrical engineering.

What are common projects and responsibilities for an associate electrical engineer during the first year?

As an Associate Electrical Engineer, you can expect to work on tasks such as drafting electrical schematics, assisting with circuit design, supporting senior engineers in troubleshooting, and performing site visits to ensure compliance with specifications. Early projects often involve collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as mechanical engineers and project managers, to help deliver solutions on time and within budget. You'll likely use industry-standard software tools and participate in regular team meetings to discuss progress and address challenges. Over time, you will gain increasing responsibility as you demonstrate your technical skills and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate electrical engineer?

To thrive as an Associate Electrical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, a relevant bachelor's degree, and foundational experience with circuit design and analysis. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software (such as AutoCAD or MATLAB), electrical simulation tools, and occasionally an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively on complex projects and convey technical information clearly. These abilities are crucial for ensuring accurate designs, meeting project deadlines, and contributing positively to multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What is the difference between Associate Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectAssociate Electrical EngineerElectrical Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; some roles may require internshipsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; often requires licensure or certification for advanced roles
Work EnvironmentEntry-level positions in design, testing, or maintenance within engineering firms, manufacturing, or utilitiesDesign, development, testing, and project management in similar industries, often with more responsibility
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly employed in engineering firms, construction, and utilities; often a starting roleUsed across industries for more experienced roles, often requiring additional certifications

The main difference between an Associate Electrical Engineer and an Electrical Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. The Associate role is typically entry-level, focusing on supporting engineering tasks, while the Electrical Engineer usually has more experience and handles complex projects. Both roles require a bachelor's degree, but the Electrical Engineer may need licensure for advanced responsibilities.

How much do associate electrical engineers make?

Associate electrical engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $85,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while those with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher wages.

What can you do with an associate electrical engineer degree?

An associate electrical engineer degree prepares individuals for entry-level roles such as electrical technician, engineering assistant, or field service technician. Graduates can work on designing, testing, and maintaining electrical systems, often using tools like CAD software and following safety standards. Additional certifications may enhance job prospects and responsibilities.

Job description

JUNIOR ELECTRICAL ESTIMATOR / ESTIMADOR ELÉCTRICO JUNIOR

Company: Division 16, LLC
Location: Caguas, Puerto Rico
Type: Full-time – On-site
Focus: ~95% Office / ~5% Occasional Field Work

Position Description

Division 16, LLC is seeking a Junior Electrical Estimator to join our Estimating and Preconstruction Department.

We are looking for a candidate with previous experience in the electrical construction industry or a closely related electrical field, with a working knowledge of electrical materials, equipment, systems, drawings, and construction processes, who is interested in developing a career in electrical estimating.

The ideal candidate may have experience in electrical estimating, electrical construction, electrical equipment or material sales, project coordination, procurement, field supervision, technical support, or other related electrical industry roles.

Previous direct estimating experience is preferred; however, candidates with a strong electrical background, analytical skills, and the ability to understand plans, materials, equipment, and project requirements will also be considered.

This position offers the opportunity to work directly with experienced estimators while progressively developing the skills necessary to prepare complete and competitive electrical estimates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and assist with electrical quantity takeoffs from construction drawings and specifications.
  • Review electrical plans, specifications, addenda, RFIs, and other bid documents.
  • Identify electrical materials, equipment, systems, and project scope requirements.
  • Assist in developing material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Request, organize, and follow up on vendor and supplier quotations.
  • Prepare material lists, estimating worksheets, data summaries, and internal reports.
  • Assist in identifying scope gaps, exclusions, clarifications, and potential cost impacts.
  • Support the preparation of electrical proposals and bid packages.
  • Maintain organized electronic estimating files and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with senior estimators, project managers, suppliers, subcontractors, and other team members.
  • Participate in bid reviews and estimate reconciliation.
  • Learn and develop proficiency with company estimating software, databases, and internal procedures.
  • Assist in evaluating different electrical systems and construction methods during the estimating process.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1–3 years of relevant experience in the electrical industry, including one or more of the following:
  • Electrical estimating or preconstruction
  • Electrical construction
  • Electrical equipment or material sales
  • Electrical project coordination
  • Procurement or purchasing of electrical materials
  • Field supervision
  • Electrical technical support
  • Preparation of quotations or bids
  • Other closely related electrical construction or industry experience
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical construction drawings.
  • General understanding of electrical materials, equipment, and construction systems.
  • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and structure technical information clearly.
  • Effective communication skills in English and Spanish, written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and manage multiple bid-related tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience performing electrical quantity takeoffs or construction estimates.
  • Technical degree, Associate Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or coursework in:
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Construction Management
  • Engineering
  • or another related technical field.
  • Experience with electrical estimating or digital takeoff software.
  • Familiarity with commercial, industrial, institutional, or infrastructure electrical construction.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Previous field experience in electrical construction.
  • Experience obtaining or reviewing quotations from electrical suppliers or manufacturers.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is early in their estimating career or transitioning into estimating from another electrical industry position, but who already understands the fundamentals of electrical construction, materials, equipment, or project documentation.

The candidate does not need to be a senior estimator or independently manage major bids from day one. However, the individual should have enough electrical industry knowledge to contribute to takeoffs, pricing, vendor coordination, scope review, and bid preparation while continuing to develop under experienced estimators.

This is not intended as a zero-experience trainee position. Candidates should have previous relevant experience within the electrical construction or electrical industry environment.

Benefits

  • Medical Plan
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Paid Vacation
  • Sick Leave
  • Ongoing training and mentorship
  • Professional development
  • Growth opportunities within the Estimating Department
