Job Summary
.The Clinical Director is responsible for overseeing all clinical operations within the ASAM-designated treatment facility across all levels of care, including residential, and partial hospitalization. This role provides leadership, oversight, and clinical supervision to licensed and associate-level clinical staff while ensuring delivery of high-quality, ethical, and evidence-based care. The Clinical Director ensures compliance with state, federal, licensing, accreditation, and payer requirements while fostering a culture of accountability, professional growth, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees daily clinical operations across all ASAM levels of care within the facility
  • Provides clinical supervision and oversight for associate-level and licensed clinical staff in accordance with state board requirements
  • Ensures clinical programming, documentation, and services align with ASAM criteria, DBHDS regulations, CARF standards, and payer expectations
  • Supports development, implementation, and continuous improvement of clinical programming and treatment services
  • Reviews clinical documentation for quality, compliance, medical necessity, and appropriateness of care
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, training, and performance management to clinical team members
  • Collaborates with nursing, medical, operations, admissions, utilization review, and executive leadership teams to support continuity of care and client outcomes
  • Participates in treatment planning, case consultation, crisis intervention, discharge planning, and utilization management processes as needed
  • Assists with audits, investigations, corrective action plans, accreditation activities, and regulatory readiness efforts
  • Maintains awareness of evolving behavioral health regulations, payer requirements, and best practices to ensure ongoing compliance and operational excellence

Minimum Qualifications
Education / Credentials
  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related behavioral health field required
  • Active independent clinical license in the state of Virginia required (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or equivalent)
  • Qualified to provide board-approved supervision to associate-level clinicians required
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred

Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in behavioral health and/or substance use disorder treatment required
  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience working within ASAM levels of care, including residential and outpatient treatment settings required
  • Experience with Medicaid-funded services, utilization review, accreditation standards, and state licensing requirements preferred

Knowledge / Skills
  • Strong knowledge of ASAM criteria, substance use disorder treatment, co-occurring disorders, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based interventions
  • Understanding of DBHDS regulations, CARF standards, documentation requirements, and medical necessity criteria
  • Excellent leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and team development skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams
