What does an associate director ESG do?

An Associate Director ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing ESG strategies within an organization. This role involves analyzing ESG risks and opportunities, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and engaging with stakeholders to promote sustainable practices. The Associate Director ESG collaborates with various departments to integrate ESG considerations into business operations and reporting. Additionally, they often help communicate the company’s ESG performance to investors, clients, and regulatory bodies.

To thrive as an Associate Director ESG, you need in-depth knowledge of environmental, social, and governance principles, combined with a relevant degree and experience in sustainability or corporate responsibility. Familiarity with ESG reporting frameworks (such as GRI, SASB, or TCFD), data analysis tools, and sustainability certifications is typically required. Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, and strategic communication skills help drive ESG initiatives across an organization. These skills ensure effective integration of ESG strategies, compliance with regulations, and long-term value creation for the business.

About this Role

The position demonstrates strong working knowledge of Capital Group’s proxy voting guidelines and operates with increasing autonomy as experience develops. The individual displays a comprehensive understanding of the proxy voting and engagement cycle and may represent Capital Group at industry events to share insights, best practices, and process enhancements with the stewardship community.

  • Build credibility with the investment group over time, providing value-added contributions to the proxy voting process
  • Demonstrate strong risk awareness by understanding voting operations risks, controls, and team policies and procedures; proactively identify enhancements and promptly elevate issues when needed

  • Participate in projects with key stakeholders, demonstrating an understanding of team procedures and a risk awareness mindset
  • Thrive in a team environment, bringing positivity and collaboration to everything you do
  • Spot challenges early and work with others to find smart, effective solutions
Requirements
  • Self-driven and intellectually curious, seeking to understand how and why things work in the financial industry and in the connections between processes and technology
  • Learn quickly and effectively apply knowledge of systems and research resources to daily work
  • Demonstrate a developing understanding of stewardship functions, including Capital Group’s Proxy Voting Guidelines, policies, procedures, and systems
  • Communicate clearly and effectively both in writing and verbally with associates, senior business leaders, the Investment Group, and portfolio company management and directors
