What is an associate design engineer?

Associate Design Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in the development, planning, and creation of new products or systems. They work under the supervision of senior engineers, contributing to drafting designs, creating prototypes, and conducting tests to ensure functionality and quality. Their responsibilities often include preparing technical documentation, using CAD software, and collaborating with other departments to ensure design specifications are met. This role provides foundational experience for a career in engineering design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Design Engineer, you need a solid foundation in engineering principles, CAD design, and a relevant engineering degree such as mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit) and knowledge of relevant codes or certifications are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and attention to detail set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills are crucial for creating accurate, efficient designs and collaborating effectively with teams to deliver successful engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by associate design engineers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Associate Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new design software, understanding project specifications, and effectively communicating with cross-functional teams. It's common to feel overwhelmed by the technical complexity of projects or the pace of deliverables. To overcome these hurdles, new engineers should take advantage of mentorship opportunities, actively seek feedback, and participate in collaborative meetings to build confidence and technical proficiency. Regularly reviewing documentation and engaging with more experienced colleagues can also help accelerate learning and integration into the team.

What is the difference between Associate Design Engineer vs Design Engineer?

AspectAssociate Design EngineerDesign Engineer

Job description

About the Company:

Metglas, Inc., located in Conway, SC near Myrtle Beach, is a world leading producer of Amorphous Metal Ribbon. Since our company began in the 1970’s, Metglas, Inc. (then Allied Signal located in Morristown, NJ) pioneered the development and production of amorphous metal, a unique alloy that exhibits a structure in which the metal atoms occur in a random pattern. The key to Metglas Inc.’s proprietary manufacturing process is the rapid-solidification of molten alloy at a rate of approximately one million degrees Celsius per second.

We are seeking a Mechanical CAD Designer with 2–4 years of experience for a 100% onsite position at our Myrtle Beach/Conway, SC location.

Position Overview:

In this role, you will focus on sustaining engineering, equipment optimization, plant layout organization, and legacy data modernization. You will be responsible for updating old equipment drawings, reverse-engineering obsolete components, and designing practical modifications like brackets and guards. Additionally, you will take ownership of the facility building drawings, segregating and updating layout files to reflect accurate factory floor footprints. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented SolidWorks and AutoCAD user to directly support factory uptime and infrastructure organization.

Core Responsibilities:

Sustaining Engineering & Equipment Support

  • Design custom brackets, safety guards, mounts, and simple mechanical fixtures to improve factory floor safety and machine efficiency.
  • Identify and source compatible replacement parts for obsolete equipment by analyzing fit, form, and function.
  • Collaborate with maintenance technicians and production teams to troubleshoot equipment issues and model practical, fast-turnaround solutions.

Facility Layout & Building Drawings Management

  • Update and maintain master facility building drawings to ensure accurate plant floor footprints and structural dimensions.
  • Segregate complex facility layouts into clear, manageable layers or separate files (e.g., separating utility lines, production equipment, safety pathways, and structural grids).
  • Document equipment relocations and new machinery installations within the master layout to keep plant documentation live and accurate.

 Drafting & Documentation Modernization

  • Convert legacy drawings (paper blueprints, PDFs, 2D AutoCAD files) into fully parametric 3D models and standardized 2D production drawings.
  • Audit, clean up, and organize the existing engineering file database to establish clear version control.
  • Apply proper Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure outsourced or internally machined parts fit perfectly on the first try.

Job Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Education (Required): Must possess a minimum of a 2-year associate degree in CAD/Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a relevant Engineering Technology degree.
  • Experience: 2 to 4 years of professional experience in mechanical drafting, CAD design, or plant layout design, ideally within a heavy manufacturing, steel, or industrial plant environment.
  • Software Expertise: Highly proficient in SolidWorks (3D modeling, sheet metal design, assembly creation, and 2D drafting). Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D for handling large facility and building layout drawings.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong ability to reverse-engineer physical parts using calipers, micrometers, and other standard measuring tools.
    • Experience reading architectural or industrial plant building layout drawings.
    • Solid understanding of manufacturing processes (machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication) to ensure designs are easy and cost-effective to build.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Self-starter with a strong inner drive to hunt down missing information and independently tackle unorganized archives.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, manage daily tasks efficiently, and make logical technical decisions on the fly.
    • Highly organized, methodical, and enthusiastic about "dusting off" old files to bring them to modern standards.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with shop-floor technicians, engineers, and facility managers.
    • Exceptional technical and problem-solving skills and reasoning ability.
    • Ability to succeed in a team-oriented environment with strong collaboration skills.
    • Express a strong desire for personal and professional growth within a team environment that strives to create new and novel designs aligning with our corporate goals.
