What is an associate design engineer?

Associate Design Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in the development, planning, and creation of new products or systems. They work under the supervision of senior engineers, contributing to drafting designs, creating prototypes, and conducting tests to ensure functionality and quality. Their responsibilities often include preparing technical documentation, using CAD software, and collaborating with other departments to ensure design specifications are met. This role provides foundational experience for a career in engineering design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Design Engineer, you need a solid foundation in engineering principles, CAD design, and a relevant engineering degree such as mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit) and knowledge of relevant codes or certifications are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and attention to detail set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills are crucial for creating accurate, efficient designs and collaborating effectively with teams to deliver successful engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by associate design engineers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Associate Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new design software, understanding project specifications, and effectively communicating with cross-functional teams. It's common to feel overwhelmed by the technical complexity of projects or the pace of deliverables. To overcome these hurdles, new engineers should take advantage of mentorship opportunities, actively seek feedback, and participate in collaborative meetings to build confidence and technical proficiency. Regularly reviewing documentation and engaging with more experienced colleagues can also help accelerate learning and integration into the team.

Job description

BIM Mechanical Piping Designer

Position Overview

As a BIM Mechanical Piping Designer (internal title: BIM Coordinator) at a Modigent operating company, you will create, manage, and coordinate detailed 3D BIM models for HVAC piping and process piping systems. You will produce accurate shop drawings and fabrication-ready models, perform clash detection, and collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and field teams to ensure clash-free, constructible designs. This role bridges office planning and on-site execution and offers the opportunity to mentor less experienced BIM team members while contributing to continuous improvement of BIM standards and workflows.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D models of HVAC piping and process piping systems from engineered drawings with minimal supervision using Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, and related tools.
  • Produce shop drawings, spool drawings, and fabrication-ready models to support prefabrication and field installation.
  • Perform clash detection and interference checks; generate reports and collaborate with project teams to resolve spatial conflicts before construction.
  • Participate in real-time coordination meetings and maintain clear project documentation on company servers or client platforms (Bluebeam, Procore, etc.).
  • Support field teams by providing digital construction layouts for tools such as Trimble robotic total stations and mobile applications.
  • Adhere to and help develop company BIM standards, workflows, and templates; contribute to continuous process improvement.
  • Assist engineers and estimators with conceptual designs, cost estimates, and design-build deliverables as needed.
  • Mentor and support less experienced BIM Designers, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Report to the BIM Manager and collaborate effectively across design, project management, and field teams.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in BIM modeling or as a design engineer, preferably in mechanical, HVAC, or plumbing systems. Field experience is valued.
  • Education: Associateโ€™s or Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, CAD Drafting, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driverโ€™s license required for occasional job site visits.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with the ability to visit job sites for surveys or coordination as needed.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Professional office setting with hybrid options possible. Occasional field visits required.

Required Skills

  • Expert proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks.
  • Familiarity with Fabrication CADmep, Bluebeam, Trimble layout tools, and other relevant software is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical construction processes, trade coordination, and field layout techniques.
  • Experience with design-build projects preferred.
  • Detail-oriented, collaborative, and able to communicate effectively with diverse project stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to team success.
