To thrive as an Associate Design Engineer, you need a solid foundation in engineering principles, CAD design, and a relevant engineering degree such as mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit) and knowledge of relevant codes or certifications are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and attention to detail set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills are crucial for creating accurate, efficient designs and collaborating effectively with teams to deliver successful engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Associate Design Engineers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Associate Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new design software, understanding project specifications, and effectively communicating with cross-functional teams. It's common to feel overwhelmed by the technical complexity of projects or the pace of deliverables. To overcome these hurdles, new engineers should take advantage of mentorship opportunities, actively seek feedback, and participate in collaborative meetings to build confidence and technical proficiency. Regularly reviewing documentation and engaging with more experienced colleagues can also help accelerate learning and integration into the team.

We plan, design, permit, mitigate, and restore for projects across our communities, infrastructure systems, open spaces, and wildlands. We are 50 years strong in 21 offices across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeastern United States.
ESA seeks a highly motivated entry-level Restoration Engineer with 0-3 years' experience to join our team of engineers, hydrologists, geomorphologists, and landscape architects in the Bay Area. This position will support a variety of creek, river, floodplain, and wetland projects in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout California. We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic team member with a passion for ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions, and the desire to learn and grow. This is a full-time, exempt salary role with hybrid work expectations. Candidates must be able to work in an office on a hybrid schedule (2-3 days per week) in the San Francisco, Oakland, or Petaluma office location and be available as needed to travel to other ESA offices for in-person team collaboration.

  • Education, training, and/or work experience in the following is desirable but not required: hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and modeling software; geographic information systems software (such as ArcGIS); preparation of engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates; river and wetland sciences (such as hydrology, geomorphology, ecology).
  • You are a capable problem solver who can work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • You are an effective communicator with excellent oral and writing skills who can convey basic technical information clearly and concisely to individuals and small groups.
  • You are a collaborative team member able to use various communication tools to effectively combine in-person and remote teamwork.

What You Will Do for ESA
Support design, analysis, engineering, and drafting for creek, river, floodplain, and wetland restoration, engineering with nature, climate change resilience, flood risk management, and other water resources and civil engineering projects under direct supervision of a senior engineer or hydrologist.
