Job description

The Longmeadow Storrs Library is seeking a FT Library Assistant: 36.25 hours per week. The position is responsible for assisting department staff with cataloging and processing materials, maintaining, and developing the collection, planning, and facilitating functions, planning, and coordinating programs and outreach activities, and providing customer service to patrons.

  • Assists with planning Library programming, outreach activities, and special projects including designing, scheduling, and gathering materials to run engaging and enriching programs for patrons; leads or facilitates programs led by others.
  • Assists with planning summer reading program.
  • Schedules special performers and events, gathers prize donations, publicizes in-person and through the schools, and provides readers daily encouragements and support.
  • Plans, creates, and designs graphics for Library displays of books and other offerings.
Successful candidate must have:
  • Knowledge of relevant Massachusetts General Laws related to essential functions. Knowledge of Dewey decimal system, Library of Congress Classification System, and library shelving organization conventions. Ability to lead group activities and read aloud. Familiarity with quality children's books from the classics to the modern day strongly preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage conflict. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain good public relations and to maintain effective collaborative working relationships with Town departments, department heads, fellow employees, officials and the general public and to respond in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently. Ability to work well with others, dependability, in a respectful and non-judgmental personality. Ability to learn new software as needed.
  • Strong communication skills, problem-solving skills and customer service skills. Proficient in use of computer programs including Microsoft Office and Google Suites, email, and internet. Position requires proficiency with Evergreen.
High School diploma or equivalent, and 1 to 3 years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience. Associates degree preferred.
  • Salary $19.04 to $20.22 per hour DOE/DOQ
  • Hampden County Pension and Excellent Benefits.
    • Evening hours required with rotating Saturdays
