Job Description
The Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship is responsible for the achievement of the research mission and scholarly activities of the School of Nursing (SON) and its alignment with the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a Research Intensive University. In this role he/she is responsible for providing the leadership for the Office of Research and Scholarship (ORS) and its staff; facilitating the School's overall research program; collaborating with the Dean, Associate Deans, Department Chairs, Assistant Deans and Directors to integrate the School's three missions of teaching, research and service; providing consultation and facilitating development of faculty to achieve their research and scholarship goals; collaborating with University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers and Research Administration to advance the research mission; and engaging in his/her own programs of funded research and scholarship.
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Dean, School of Nursing
FUNCTIONS:
1. Subscribe to the mission of the School of Nursing and UAB.
2. Collaborate with other Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Chairs and Directors to facilitate faculty research and scholarship development serving as the authority on all aspects of research/scholarship/mission.
3. Collaborate with University research administrative leadership to advance the research/scholarship mission.
4. Provide leadership in the initiation and maintenance of a strong research agenda in the SON consistent with a Research Intensive University.
5. Develop and administer the ORS budget and related activities associated with preparation, submission and administration of funded research and other scholarly projects and/or programs.
6. Responsible for reporting activities of the ORS.
7. Provide leadership in identifying, recruiting and retaining faculty with viable research and scholarship programs for the SON.
8. Oversee mentors for faculty in research programs, including input into faculty evaluation, with accountability and decision-making authority for faculty work-load assignment related to the research/scholarship mission, when consensus is not achieved.
9. Ensure SON representation on university-wide research related committees (i.e. IRB, RAG)
10. Maintain a program of research and scholarship, which includes funded grant awards, publications and presentations.
11. Promote the advancement of nursing science and the visibility of the SON research and scholarship programs locally, nationally and internationally.
12. Contribute to the educational mission in area of expertise.
Stay knowledgeable regarding changing research environment at the federal, state, and foundation levels.
Required Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Doctorate in nursing or related field.
  2. Candidates should be eligible to qualify for tenure with appointment at the rank of Professor.
  3. If a nurse, must be eligible for professional licensure in the State of Alabama.
  4. Distinguished record of grant funding and scholarly achievements.
  5. Successful educator and scholar.
  6. Excellence in administration/leadership and communication
  7. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with all constituents.
  8. Visionary who strongly supports the tripartite mission of the SON.
