Job description

Job Summary
Michigan Medicine Finance is seeking a Business Intelligence Analyst to join its Cost Analytic and Decision Intelligence (CAnDI) team. Michigan Medicine Finance serves as the central finance group for Michigan Medicine and is comprised of multiple functional areas. The CAnDI team plays a key role in helping leadership make data-driven strategy through the deployment of activity-based costing system/data that's generated using multiple data sources from across the enterprise, creating/maintaining analytic tools, and performing ad hoc financial analysis.
This Business Intelligence Analyst will be responsible for end-to-end BI solutions, including SQL programming, Database/Datamart architecture design and development, creation of reports and visualizations using appropriate Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau), and data analysis. Ideal candidates should have a blend of technical and health care operational experience, with demonstrated proficiency in technical, problem-solving, and analytical skills and the ability to function with a high degree of autonomy.
Responsibilities*
  • Participate in the design, development, and maintenance of costing logic and systems. Serve as a technical expert, including but not limited to SQL programming, assessing system performance/application results, troubleshooting programming/system failures, and costing errors to maintain costing database integrity.
  • Designing, developing and testing changes in data structures, application configuration and programmed components (e.g., SQL)
  • Mining large complex data sets from various data sources to understand data flow, identify root cause, find solutions to known issues as well as identify opportunities for management
  • Monitor month-end costing cycle and resolve any technical issues arisen in time. Partner with others in the month-end costing validation process
  • Work directly with our vendor partner to improve the delivery of the costing information across the organization.
  • Work with complex data sets, synthesize and summarize financial/operational findings effectively, allowing for the identification of key issues, decision-making criteria, and the determination of strategies and plans
  • Design, develop and recommend new approaches, methodologies, and tools for data-driven decision-making and planning.
  • Provide data analytic support to other finance teams and clinical areas
  • Perform ad hoc analyses and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Health Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Science/Analytics, Business, Finance, Economics or a related field
  • Proficient use of Excel, SQL, or alternative relational database querying software to support business needs
  • Experience in assessing and/or debugging system performance, failures, and application results
  • Working knowledge in BI architecture and function, as well as data analysis & visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, etc.) to customize tools to specific user needs in a creative fashion.
  • Ability to understand complex clinical and business processes and identify relevant data sets, and to translate business rules/requirements into technical solutions
  • Problem-solving capabilities including root cause analysis, process comprehension, development of alternative solutions, and recommended course of action
  • A natural curiosity to data. Be self-driven in questioning data, investigating system/data issues, and finding the root cause; able to translate the findings into actionable information for decision-making
  • Comfort in navigating ambiguity with a can-do attitude, adaptable and quick learner, willingness to acquire and develop new skills as needed
  • Ability to function independently and require minimal day-to-day supervision to deliver projects in a timely and effective manner
  • Works well in a collaborative environment as part of a team
  • Associate: 0 - 2 years of professional experience
  • Intermediate: 3 - 5 years of professional experience
  • Senior: 5+ years of professional experience
