Associate Counselor information

What is an associate counselor?

Associate counselors are mental health professionals who have completed the necessary education, such as a master's degree in counseling or a related field, and are working under supervision to gain clinical experience required for full licensure. They provide counseling services to clients dealing with a range of emotional, behavioral, or mental health issues. Associate counselors often work in schools, clinics, private practices, or community organizations, and their work is supervised by a licensed counselor. Their primary goal is to help clients develop coping strategies, improve mental well-being, and achieve personal growth while they work toward independent licensure.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an associate counselor?

To thrive as an Associate Counselor, you typically need a master's degree in counseling or a related field and state licensure or certification. Familiarity with case management systems, counseling software, and evidence-based therapeutic modalities is important. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, active listening, and cultural sensitivity help you connect with and support clients effectively. These skills and qualifications are crucial for building trust, ensuring ethical practice, and delivering impactful mental health care.

What challenges do associate counselors face when working with clients, and how can they manage them?

Associate Counselors often encounter challenges such as building rapport with clients, managing complex emotional issues, and maintaining professional boundaries. Navigating client resistance or ambivalence can be particularly demanding, especially early in the therapeutic relationship. To manage these challenges, Associate Counselors benefit from regular supervision, ongoing training, and collaborating closely with more experienced colleagues. Additionally, self-care and maintaining a balanced workload are important practices to sustain effectiveness and prevent burnout.

Job description

Associate Counsel — Real Mentorship, A Real Path to Senior Counsel

Austin, TX (In-Office) | Full-Time | Salaried, Exempt

Most junior attorneys spend years doing document review before anyone trusts them with real work. Here, you'll be in the room from day one — learning directly from leadership, on matters that actually matter.

Freedom Power was born when Freedom Solar and Freedom HVAC joined forces to become Texas's complete whole-house energy company. We don't just install equipment. We hand homeowners the keys to something bigger: control over their energy, their bills, and their future. We call it Energy Empowerment, and it's not a tagline — it's the reason we show up every day.

As Associate Counsel, you'll work shoulder to shoulder with our Legal leadership team across contracts, disputes, compliance, and corporate matters — building the exact skill set that turns a Junior Counsel into a Senior Counsel. This isn't a role where you get parked on one narrow lane of work for years. You'll rotate through transactional drafting, dispute resolution, lien compliance, vendor onboarding, and strategic projects, with leadership actively investing in your growth at every step. If you're looking for a legal career with a visible, achievable next step — this is it.

Your Growth Path

Associate Counsel at Freedom Power isn't a holding pattern — it's the first rung on a defined ladder. You'll work directly alongside our legal leadership team, who are invested in mentoring you toward Senior Counsel and beyond. Expect regular feedback, real ownership of matters (not just busywork), and exposure to the kind of cross-functional strategic work that's usually reserved for much more senior attorneys. As you build expertise in energy, construction, and consumer law, you'll take on more autonomy, more complex matters, and a bigger seat at the table.

Your Day-to-Day
  • Provide day-to-day legal support to Sales, Marketing, Operations, and Supply Chain, alongside the Leadership team.
  • Help manage and respond to customer dispute matters, including cancellations, liens, and collections.
  • Prepare and respond to demand letters, regulatory inquiries, and pre-litigation correspondence.
  • Draft and review settlement and release agreements, and support legal review on customer compensation decisions.
  • Support mechanic's lien compliance across our operating states and respond to lender and third-party notices.
  • Draft, review, and redline residential and commercial agreements — installation, subcontractor, service, and terms and conditions.
  • Support vendor onboarding, confirming compliance through the contract lifecycle.
  • Assist with corporate secretarial work: entity management, company policies, and licensing.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memos and presentations on relevant regulatory topics.
  • Help build and maintain legal templates, guidelines, and in-house policies.
  • Manage legal matter intake and triage from start to resolution.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on litigation holds, document preservation, and discovery.
  • Support Leadership on strategic, cross-functional projects tied to our mission and values.
What You Bring
  • JD from an accredited law school and active membership in the Texas State Bar (or ability to obtain admission within 60 days of start)
  • 1–4 years of experience as a licensed attorney
  • Litigation experience preferred; foundational commercial transactional knowledge, with consumer law, construction, energy, or project finance exposure a plus
  • Genuine interest in — or willingness to learn — the renewable energy and HVAC industries
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Eagerness to learn, grow, and take on more responsibility as you go
  • High integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, and sound judgment
  • A collaborative mindset that works well across teams
  • Ability to work in-office in Austin, TX
The Physical Side
  • On-site position, working both closely with others and independently
  • Comfortable with light lifting and carrying (under 15 lbs), walking, standing, and sitting
  • Comfortable operating standard office equipment and a motor vehicle
What's In It For You
  • Direct mentorship from leadership
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 100% Company-Sponsored Short-Term Disability
  • 401(k) Employer Matching
  • Weekly Pay Dates
  • 3 Weeks PTO + 3 Sick Days
  • 12 Paid Holidays + 1 Floating Holiday

Freedom Power is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
