Job description

Position Summary...What you'll do...Role summary:
We're seeking a Senior Manager, Earnings Controls, to help build, operationalize, and scale the control environment supporting Walmart's Spark Driver program. Reporting to the Director of Earnings Controls, this role will focus on identifying, prioritizing, and mitigating operational and financial risks across contractor earnings, tax operations, and supporting technology systems. This person will serve as a key cross-functional partner to Finance, Controllership, Legal, Tax, Engineering, Product, Compliance, and business operations teams to design and implement controls. You'll help translate complex regulatory and financial requirements into operational guardrails that protect both the company and our contractor partners.
About the team:
The Earnings Controls function sits within the broader Spark Driver Earnings organization and plays a critical role in strengthening the integrity, scalability, and reliability of Walmart's gig-economy operations. Our team designs and governs control frameworks that support accurate, compliant earnings disbursements and responsible business execution for Walmart's independent contractor ecosystem. We focus on business-process and operational controls across areas such as earnings calculations, tax withholding and reporting, identity verification, onboarding, payment disbursements, and contractor compliance.
What you'll do:
  • Lead control design and implementation across contractor earnings processes, including pay calculations, incentive programs, deductions, tax withholding, 1099 reporting, and payment disbursements.
  • Own control assessments for the Spark Driver earnings ecosystem, identifying control gaps, prioritizing remediation efforts, and developing controls.
  • Partner with Engineering and Product teams to design and validate IT-dependent manual controls (ITDMs) and IT General Controls (ITGCs) over earnings systems, ensuring system changes don't introduce control deficiencies.
  • Drive SOX readiness and compliance by maintaining control documentation, risk-control matrices (RCMs) and process narratives.
  • Build and maintain monitoring mechanisms including key risk indicators (KRIs) and dashboards that provide real-time visibility into control health.

What you'll bring:
  • 8+ years of experience in internal controls, SOX/ICFR, internal audit, operational risk, finance transformation, or related risk/control roles - preferably in a high-growth or technology-enabled environment.
  • Experience with gig-economy, payments, or contractor operations including familiarity with 1099 reporting, earnings disbursements, tax compliance, or similar multi-party payment ecosystems.
  • Strong judgment on control design in fast-scaling environments - knowing when lightweight guardrails are sufficient, when formal SOX controls are required, and when automation or monitoring is the better answer.
  • Deep familiarity with core controls concepts including preventive vs. detective controls, manual vs. automated controls, IT-dependent controls, key controls vs. complementary controls, and deficiency evaluation frameworks.

At Walmart, we offer competitive pay as well as performance-based bonus awards and other great benefits for a happier mind, body, and wallet.
