SALARY RANGE: $106,250.00 - $143,750.00

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves directing the operations of the Biomedical Engineering Department at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. The incumbent manages and coordinates the functions related to ensuring safe usage of biomedical equipment such as testing, maintenance, inspection and training. The incumbent also performs activities such as analyzing data, preparing reports, developing and monitoring budgets, developing specifications and working with vendors and contractors. The incumbent administers the daily operations to ensure compliance with federal, state, local and accreditation laws, rules, regulations and standards and maintains round the clock oversight of Biomedical Engineering Department. Work is performed under the general direction of a higher-level administrator, with leeway for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision is exercised over lower-level Biomedical Engineering staff. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Oversees the installation, maintenance, calibration and inspection of biomedical equipment;

Manages and evaluates technical Biomedical Engineering staff in the installation, maintenance, calibration and inspection of biomedical equipment;

Oversees equipment usage and safety training programs administered to technical and medical staff;

Collaborates with Executive Leadership, Nursing and Medical staff to determine issues with existing equipment and potential equipment needs;

Develops and approves specifications and performance of new equipment; determines suitability for utilization and compatibility with existing equipment;

Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure the availability of equipment, its optimum usage and related safety precautions;

Monitors industry literature and trends to stay current with new equipment and technological advances for potential use at ECMCC;

Prepares departmental budgets and monitors performance and variances; approves requisitions for equipment, tools and supplies;

Develops schedules and supervises testing of equipment; inspects equipment as needed;

Participates in the development of biomedical equipment contracts; monitors the performance of such contracts;

Collects, maintains and analyzes required data; prepares and presents reports as needed;

Serves as a liaison to vendors and contractors;

Monitors product recall notices and performs necessary corrective action to ensure safety.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of biomedical equipment, operation and terminology; thorough knowledge of principles and practices for installing, maintaining, calibrating and inspecting biomedical equipment; thorough knowledge of safety standards associated with biomedical equipment; good knowledge of federal, state, local and accreditation laws, rules and regulations and standards related to biomedical equipment; ability to direct the work of others; ability to read, write and interpret electronic specifications; ability to develop and implement training programs related to equipment usage and safety precautions; ability to research, comprehend and interpret relevant industry trends; ability to anticipate and plan for equipment needs and its effect on existing technology; ability to manage multiple priorities; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with a diverse constituency; ability to analyze data; ability to prepare and present reports; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; sound professional judgment; initiative; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree, majoring in Biomedical Electronics, Electronics or closely related field, and five (5) years of experience in the maintenance of electronic equipment, of which three (3) years involved maintenance of biomedical equipment and of which two (2) years were in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or:
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree or sixty (60) semester credit hours, majoring in Biomedical Electronics, Electronics or closely related field, and seven (7) years of experience in the maintenance of electronic equipment, of which three (3) years involved maintenance of biomedical equipment and of which two (2) years were in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and nine (9) years of experience in the maintenance of electronic equipment, of which three (3) years involved maintenance of biomedical equipment and of which two (2) years were in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or:
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C).

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
