What is an associate applications developer?

An Associate Applications Developer is an entry-level professional who assists in designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications. They typically work under the supervision of senior developers, contributing to the development of web, desktop, or mobile applications. Their responsibilities often include debugging code, writing documentation, and collaborating with team members to deliver functional software solutions. This role is ideal for recent graduates or those with limited experience looking to build foundational skills in software development.

What are some common challenges associate applications developers face when transitioning from academic projects to real-world software development?

One common challenge for Associate Applications Developers is adapting to collaborative, large-scale codebases where multiple developers contribute, requiring strong version control and communication skills. Unlike academic projects, real-world development often involves adhering to established coding standards, thorough documentation, and regular code reviews. Additionally, learning how to balance new feature development with bug fixes and maintenance tasks is essential. Embracing agile methodologies and collaborating closely with senior developers, testers, and product managers helps smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate applications developer?

To thrive as an Associate Applications Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C#), software development principles, and a relevant degree in computer science or similar fields. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio or Eclipse, and experience with databases are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective teamwork, and clear communication set standout developers apart. These skills and qualities ensure the ability to build reliable applications, collaborate efficiently, and adapt to evolving project needs.

Job description

Davin Tech Group

Davin Tech Group is a managed IT and cybersecurity partner supporting mission-driven organizations across the country. We embed ourselves into our clients' operations, combining hands-on technical execution with thoughtful advice, clear communication, and high standards. We want people who take ownership, move with urgency, and care deeply about the people they support.

The Role

This is an early-career role within our technical support team. You’ll work directly with our clients and alongside experienced Specialists, Consultants, and Engineers to keep their day-to-day technology running smoothly.

You’ll troubleshoot issues, configure and deploy technology, support client systems, maintain documentation, and assist with projects and onsite work. You won’t be expected to know everything on day one, but you will be expected to learn quickly, ask good questions, follow through, and take increasing ownership as your skills grow.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide exceptional remote and onsite support for Davin clients.
  • Own support requests through resolution and keep users informed along the way.
  • Troubleshoot laptops, desktops, mobile devices, printers, SaaS applications, networks, and peripherals.
  • Configure and deploy computers, phones, accounts, applications, and other technology.
  • Assist with onboarding, offboarding, asset management, and client documentation.
  • Support networking, identity, cloud, endpoint-management, and other client systems.
  • Participate in migrations, office buildouts, hardware refreshes, and other technology projects.
  • Collaborate and escalate intelligently when you need help, and learn from the resolution.

Who We’re Looking For:

You’re curious, dependable, and motivated to get better every week. You’re excited by a challenge and genuinely interested in how things work. When you don’t know something, you’re comfortable saying, “I don’t know, let me find out,” and then digging into the research, asking good questions, and learning from the answer. When you make a mistake, you own it and learn from it.

You enjoy variety and are comfortable working across different clients, industries, environments, and technologies. You stay organized when priorities shift, pay attention to the small details, and take pride in doing things thoroughly. You’d rather have every day look a little different than settle into the same routine.

Most importantly, you’re a people-first person and a strong communicator. You ask clear questions, listen carefully, and can explain technical concepts in a way that makes sense to someone who may be busy, frustrated, or not particularly technical. You care about solving the person’s problem, not just getting the ticket out of your queue.

Above all, you’re someone clients and teammates can count on.

What You Bring:

  • A genuine interest in technology and helping people.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Logical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic familiarity with Windows, macOS, and mobile operating systems.
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn unfamiliar technologies.
  • The ability to stay organized and communicate when priorities change.

Bonus points:

  • Previous help desk, internship, homelab, or technical project experience.
  • Exposure to Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Box, Dropbox, Monday, Slack, Teams, Zoom, VOIP, and other industry-specific line of business applications.
  • Exposure to Active Directory, Entra ID, and other identity and access management platforms.
  • Experience with RMM/MDM, EDR, SSO/MFA, backup, networking or other managed-services tooling.
  • PowerShell, scripting, automation, programming, or other technical tinkering.
  • A technical hobby or project you're genuinely excited to talk about.

Physical & Work Environment:

This is a hands-on role, and sometimes that means getting away from the desk. You may be installing equipment, tracing cabling, moving between workstations, or working in network and IT spaces. With or without reasonable accommodation, you should be able to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds, crouch or kneel when needed, and use a computer and standard office equipment for extended periods.

Location & On-site Expectations:

This role is based at our headquarters in Plymouth, MA, with hybrid flexibility and regular client-site work. Our clients span nationwide, so you should be comfortable getting on the road when the work calls for it.

Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to local client locations are required. Davin provides commuter benefits and mileage reimbursement in accordance with IRS guidelines.

Compensation & Benefits:

$45,000 - $60,000 per year, depending on experience, plus monthly incentive pay program.

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance (100% covered for employees; 50% for dependents).
  • Company-paid short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Flexible work environment.

How We Work:

  • Take ownership. Do what you say you'll do. If something changes, communicate.
  • Move with urgency. Not everything is an emergency, but important things don't sit around.
  • Figure things out. Investigate, ask good questions, involve the right people, and keep moving.
  • Take care of people. The person on the other side of the technology matters.
  • Leave it better. Solve today's problem and look for ways to prevent tomorrow's.

How to Apply:

Send your resume and a brief introduction to careers"@"davintechgroup.com. Tell us why you're interested in the role, what makes you a strong fit, and anything you've built, learned, or worked on that we should know about.

Note: We will review and consider all applicants.
