Position Title: Maintenance Technician

Department: Facilities

Supervisor: Maintenance Manager

Position Status: Full Time

Position Description:

Responsible for the inspection, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and general repair of the zoo. Performs assignments related to the upkeep of any zoo buildings, grounds, property, and animal habitats in a timely and efficient manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Team player who can follow directions and can make logical decisions.
  • Perform general facilities duties including carpentry, drywall, masonry, welding, electrical work, plumbing, and basic HVAC.
  • Safely operate construction related vehicles and machinery; this may include tractors, skid steer, lifts, and loaders.
  • Safely operate battery and electric power tools.
  • Assist all zoo departments with departmental repairs or maintenance related initiatives; this may include grounds, horticulture, and animal departments.
  • Complete maintenance on animal habitats and support facilities while being able to follow all the rules regarding the animal safety and their habitats.
  • Partner with outside contractors and volunteer groups on assigned projects.
  • Assist with the setup and take down of special events.
  • Receive and input work order information into a computer and cell phone.

Qualifications

  • Three years of facilities or maintenance experience is preferred.
  • Operating knowledge of power tools, machinery, and safety related equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, analyze, and make repairs that may include electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
  • Manual dexterity to use several types of power tools.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions; may need work in confined spaces.
  • Able to work safely with ladders and work at heights.
  • Strong general maintenance, plumbing, and basic HVAC skills are preferred.
  • Basic computer and typing skills are required.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule.
  • The ability to effectively work solo or part of a team is required.
  • Demonstrate a daily commitment to Nashville Zoo's mission and values.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance. 

 

Education/ Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 1 year of general maintenance experience required.

 

Physical Responsibilities:

  • Ability to work outdoors year-round, including in inclement weather.
  • Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period. Applicants must be able to bend, stoop and extend themselves, etc., as required for assigned tasks.
  • Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds without assistance.

 

Work Schedule:

  • Weekdays, typically 7:00am to 3:30pm
  • Some holiday work or weekend work may be required.
  • Some work on special events may be required.
