Job Description:

Minimum pay for this position is $18.62/hour.  Additional compensation will be considered for candidates with higher amounts of experience above the minimum requirements.

The Estate Floral Designer is responsible for planning, creating, installing and maintaining seasonal floral displays in Biltmore House and other estate locations. These displays must be creative, in keeping with the look of the Vanderbilt era, and generate interest in the estate, encouraging new and repeat visits. Plan, execute, install and care for potted interior plant displays throughout Biltmore House.

Hours: Will average 16-24 hours/week (8:30am - 4:30pm Mon - Fri , some weekends with different hours for events as needed)

Essential Job Duties:

1. Plan, create, implement and maintain routine and special event decorations for assigned house areas and estate facilities.  Displays include the creative use of fresh flowers, dried and silk materials as well as tropical and potted plants.  
2. Prioritize workload, establish and meet goals and deadlines and assess progress for assigned work.  
3.  Daily care of house plants and displays ensuring all meet aesthetic and quality standards.  
4. Assist with proper storage, organization and use of decorations, operating supplies, and equipment.
5. Responsible for maintenance and safety of installations, displays, etc.  This includes ensuring that displays are executed in a way that they do not pose a risk to furniture, surfaces or collection in Biltmore House.  
6. Establish good communication and a positive working relationship with leadership, co-workers and other departments.  Especially other departments in Biltmore House.
7. Research for creative, historically inspired ideas for appropriate displays.  Continue learning about period design, historic interior styles and cultural needs of tropical plants.  

Requirements:

1. High school diploma. Additional education, training, and/or certification(s) strongly preferred. Ideal candidate will have some college in a related field.
2. At least four (4) years of experience in the floral industry. Equivalent combination of education/experience may be considered. Preferred candidate will have prior experience in designing/executing floral displays and/or interior-scapes with historical themes.
3. Strong knowledge of the care/maintenance of blooming and tropical plants; ability to diagnose, and troubleshoot issues; familiar with historic and interpretative design styles.
4. Demonstrated commitment to delivery of world class internal/external guest service; proven leadership skills; ability to build/develop/motivate teams.
5. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; conveys information clearly/concisely; 
6. Excellent planning, organizational, project/time management skills; prioritizes work, adapts, multi-tasks as needed; keen attention to details with focus on quality and service.
7. Able to quickly acquire knowledge of Biltmore’s history, aesthetics, and brand.
8. Proficiency with Word, Outlook, and Excel; can learn Biltmore systems/processes.
9. Proactive, exercises good judgment; creative, resourceful; problem solves/troubleshoots; demonstrates company values, professionalism; strong ethics.

Physical Requirements:

1. Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 75 pounds a regular basis (with assistance).

2. Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time (on concrete and brick).

3. Ability to work repetitively cutting wires, pruning and cutting with shears, bow tying, squeezing glue gun trigger, pressing picking machine, watering plants.

4. Full range of motion; ability to kneel, squat, bend, reach overhead/below, crouch, etc.

5. Pushing and maneuvering (with assistance) watering tanks several times a week.

6. Climbing stairs regularly, and climbing ladders and scaffolding.

7. Must have a valid driver's license and be at least 19 years old.
