Laser Safety Specialist - Global EHS

itD is seeking a Laser Safety Specialist to support global EHS initiatives by ensuring laser and radiation safety compliance across research and product environments. The ideal candidate will bring strong Laser Safety Officer (LSO) experience, expertise in ANSI Z136.1, and hands-on experience with laser and radiation safety programs, including laboratory inspections, hazard analysis, laser exposure calculations, equipment evaluations, and X-ray safety.

Location: Redmond, WA - Onsite
Primary Lab Coverage: Sunnyvale, Burlingame, and Fremont, CA; travel to Redmond, WA and other locations as needed
Travel: Required as needed

Pay Rate: $40-$46 per hour, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Audit laboratories for laser and radiation safety compliance and identify potential hazards or gaps.
  • Analyze safety hazards and assist with developing requirements for hardware containing hazardous elements such as lasers, LEDs, and X-ray sources.
  • Implement laser and optical safety standards, including ANSI Z136.1 and applicable FDA/CDRH and IEC standards.
  • Conduct laser and LED power, spectral, and temporal measurements and perform exposure calculations to evaluate safety risks.
  • Create, review, and approve laser and optical hazard-related SOPs, procedures, and safety documentation.
  • Review work performed by external laser service technicians and support corrective action development and communication with stakeholders.
  • Support radiation safety activities, including X-ray leakage surveys, training and procedure audits, equipment testing, and compliance with applicable California requirements.

Internal Responsibilities

  • Attend regular internal practice community meetings.
  • Collaborate with your itD practice team on industry thought leadership.
  • Complete client case studies and learning material (blogs, media material).
  • Build out material to contribute to the Digital Transformation practice.
  • Attend internal itD networking events (in person and virtual).
  • Work with leadership on career fast-track opportunities.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • 5+ years of experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
  • Strong proficiency with ANSI Z136.1 - The American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers.
  • Experience supporting laser safety programs, including laboratory inspections, hazard assessments, and establishing appropriate area controls.
  • Experience with safety investigations, failure analysis, field testing, reliability, or a related technical/engineering function.
  • Familiarity with multiple radiation sources, including X-ray generating machines, lasers, and LEDs.
  • Experience performing or supporting laser exposure calculations and measurements.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, reporting, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams across research and product environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Optical Sciences, Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent direct LSO/RSO experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience working as both an LSO and Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
  • Proficiency with FDA/CDRH FLPPS, IEC 60825-1, and IEC 62471-1.
  • Strong understanding of laser calculations, including MPE, NOHD, and NHZ, for various laser types and configurations.
  • Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO) credential from the Board of Laser Safety.
  • Experience working in a hardware research or production environment.
  • Experience supporting additional EHS programs such as LOTO, laboratory safety, chemical safety, electrical safety, or machine guarding.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams through timely, accurate, and effective technical analysis.

Bachelor's degree in Physics, Optical Sciences, Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or a related discipline required, or equivalent direct experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO
